According to my local, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, page A-7, 26 February edition, under the headline reading Gun liability law proceeds, "75 senators in a test vote, final vote scheduled to Tuesady, voted to proceed". One takes that to mean that a motion for cloture was carried. Senators Spector and Santorum voted FOR cloture, that is to proceed. According to the brief item, Senate Democrats have threatened "public votes" on extending the assault weapons ban, and closing of the gun show loophole.

A quick call to the local or D.C. offices of Spector and Santorum, expressing appreciation for yesterdays votes would NOT be inappropriate. Others should find out how their Senators voted, and make the appropriate expression of appreciation or criticism. Also, mention that they need to stand firm re S. 659/1805, pass a "clean bill", one without amendments. As for closing the "Gun Show Loophole, those who so propose should be compelled to explain EXACTLY what this loophole is, for so far as I can tell, it does not exist.

As to extending, in any way at all, the assault weapon s ban, you might mention, in the course of your call, the following little political ditty. Hey, Hey, Ho, Ho, Assault Weapons Ban Has Got To Go. Sunset is scheduled for 13 September, 2004, and that is exactly what needs to happen. No extensions, no political games, no amendments, no conference committees, a simple setting of the sun, demise of the ban, will meet all requirements, thank you so very much.

If the foregoing appears overly long, please remember that it takes longer to write it, than to say it. Say it as long as necessary to achieve exactly what we want.
