If you are in orbit, nukes are totally unnecessary. Just start dropping big rocks. You could always go out to the astroid belt and start putting rocket engines on them. Send them back on a collision course. Or you could build a rail gun on the moon. You could wipe everything out from total safety and you sure don't need any nukes. Just dumb rocks.
