Ok to mail my own gun to me?

I'm planning to ship my first gun (a Winchester single shot .22) to myself and I want to make sure that what I'm doing is legal. The gun has been in storage at my folk's house in California for the past 38 years. I bought it with my paper route money when I was 11 years old (1958). Didn't have to fill out any paperwork or anything else. I simply handed my hard earned money to the guy in the hardware store and walked out with my brand new gun. I lost interest in the little single shot and it's consequently been in the attic for all these years. Well now it's 2008 and I would like to put the little gem in my gun safe in Colorado. I'm visiting my folks soon and I'm planning to send it to myself via US mail. I've heard that this is perfectly legal, but would like to make sure.

you can ship it you yourself. If you dont feel safe doing it, ship it to any FFL or gunsmith near your home. they may charge you $5 to $10 for doing it, but if it were me, from CA to CO. ide ship it right to myself via UPS.
 
Depending on where you live, FFL fees can be $50 or more.

Luckily, I've got one at about $20.
 
yes, it is legal to send a firearm to yourself. Since it is a long gun, it can go by US Post Office, and if they will take it, that's how I would do it. They might not accept it, but it is legal. Good luck with UPS or FEDEX. Both of those, which are the only common carriers which will ship firearms, typically want it to go to an FFL.

If you're driving, though, why not just take it with you?
