okay can any one give me a clue as to how to push a 140 grn vld to 3200 fps? I have just built a 6.5-06 AI on a remember 700 long action with a 28 inch heart bbl 1 in 8 twist. I hsve radio some stuff that leads me to believe I can get to 3200 fps with retumbo, RL 25, with this 28 inch barrel is this corect or will I need to use something more like RL 22 . thanks for any info.

Don't think that it will happen.

I think that you may be stretching the velocity a little. Even with a 28" barrel I doubt if you can achieve 2900 fps with a 140 gr. The Nosler manual shows a max of 2860fps out of a 24" barrel. If you want to sizzel try the 100gr. You can safely crank it up to 3300fps.

Captcurt, you can reach 2860 with the 140's in a 260. He won't have any trouble getting to the 3000 mark, but it may be a stretch to get to 3200. Only one way to find out.

okay thanks for the site on loads. I am a long time reloader. I will get some loads off the site you showed. I was kinda hoping someone had one and could share there info . I like to push the envelope with all my rifles I will walk it up a half grain till I get the sighn to go back down. I sure hope this rifle don't let me down.

Just don't expect that barrel to last very long. I wouldn't expect it to make much past the 1000 round mark.

According to Powley’s equations, with 140 grain bullets, your ideal powder speed is in the range of RL-22 and N165. Velocity, with a top load, is estimated at 2,960 fps with a 28” barrel.

You might be able to push that some, but not to 3,200 fps. That’s more than 8% over what’s predicted. Powley’s formulas usually provide results that are within 5% of what’s possible in the real world.

If you wanted to try something slower, like RL-25, work up slowly. A compressed load might deliver higher velocities.

when it opens up im just gonna lop it off
Wouldn't the erosion occur in the throat? Cutting a recrowning wouldn't do much. You'd need to cut out the chamber, throat, and bad rifling, then rethread, and rechamber. I think you'd end up with something more like a 22"-23" barrel.

Hey PDD,

I loaded 120 gr near max in my 260. Book showed almost 3000fps but with my compact I was under 2800. I got rid of the compact before I could play with Nosler's 100gr partition.

The only 140gr that I have shot out of a 6.5 was out of a Swede. I couldn't find my reloads after a move and had to buy factory ammo. That is the only store bought rifle stuff that I have shot in 40 years.

And to think that the Europeans shoot 160 grainers out of these things.

Cool rifle, I always liked the 6.5-06. Let us know how it works out. A long time ago I had an original 256 Newton. That old rifle taught me about fire forming cases and head space.

Coug,
Nosler is the only book that I have that shows loads for the 6.5-06 and they aren't for the AI. Shows R22 at max load of 50.5 gr., AA3100 at Max 50.5gr. and H4350 maxed at 48.5. Top speed is 2849fps out of a 24" barrel. The AI might kick you up 50 to 100fps, but that is merely a guess.
