I just put a little bit of tube between the hammer and the nipple. Seems to be ok and i can test the trigger pull without worry of tearing stuff up.

If im testing a gun at a gun show or something i put my finger between the hammer and the frame in that little curved area and put some pressure on the hammer with my finger so it kinda softens the blow.

I do the same, but as I like to draw a bead, the tube is short enough not to block the rear sight at full cock.

humm i should try something different i never point it at anything but the ground after ive cleaned it to feel the trigger make sure the action is working and everything.

Dry firing a Remmy will damage the frame.

Thats kinda what i thought too, i have a couple that have SUPER stiff springs and i dont think ide dry fire it even with the cylinder out if there wasnt anything for the hammer to fall on.

You should be able to find some tubing at a hardware store that fits over the nipple tightly. Cut pieces of it a little longer than the nipple so that when in place, the hammer will fall on the tubing first and soften the blow.

You could also lay a folded piece of cloth or some small-diameter rope in between the hammer and the frame. I have tried that myself with my Pietta Colt 1860 and it works very well.

I dryfire my topless cartridge guns with snap caps but only very rarely. The thought of dry firing any of these guns more than just a little bit gives me the willies. I suggest softening the blow with something and doing it very sparingly.

I'll put a couple of strips of leather in the hammer slot when I'm working the action to smooth it out. It keeps me from messing up the nipples if my thumb slips.

-And no, I don't intentionally dry-fire any cap-lock.
