Oklahoma law states that business owners have the right to prohibit the possession of weapons on their property. However, the law (Oklahoma Self Defense Act) does not state how the business owners are to inform me of the policy. Furthermore, it does not state what the penalties for violating these rights.

Can anyone shed some light on this? I would like something more substantial than "a guy on the internet told me ..." Specific legal references would be good.

Private businesses will have a sign posted on the entrances.

They can ask you to leave if you refuse you can be cited for trespassing is how its been explained to me. Carrying in the places outlined as off limits in the SDA is a much stiffer penalty.

Sorry no references off the top of my head.

I'v seen a few doors with the crossed out gunb sign but since the legislature pass a liability waiver a few years ago and since the streets have not run with blood as predicted most places don't worry about it, look for signs on the door and remember concealed means concealed.

welcome to thr

here in NV it is trespass, no one seems to care in Reno.
Here in NV I would look up the NRS , in CA the PC...I'm not sure where to look in OK...somebody will be along, did you ask your ccw instructor?

It's all laid out in your "Oklahoma Self-Defense Act" booklet you should have received with your CHL. At any rate, it's outlined in Oklahoma Statutes, Title 21, Section 1290.1 et seq.

The booklet also references Title 21, Sections 1272, 1273, 1276, 1277, 1278, 1279, 1280, 1283, 1284, 1287, 1289, and 1364. A couple minor points in Title 63, Paragraphs 709.2, and 4210.3, are mentioned as well.

As for carrying in someone's store where the owner/operator has posted a gun-busters sign, you must leave if you carry in such a place and are asked to leave. There is no penalty in Oklahoma law for carrying in such a place, but you can be charged with trespass if you refuse to leave when asked to do so.

As pointed out by bratch, there are places where you are forbidden to carry, and to do so - and get caught in any of those places - has proscribed penalties. Those places are spelled out in the Act(Oklahoma statutes), in several places throughout the handbook.

You can find an HTML version of the booklet here.

My CCW course did cover this but I wanted to be sure that I remembered right and didn't just presume things that I was ignorant of.

Thanks. That was what I was looking for. I know about the "forbidden places" (school, bar, courthouse, etc.) but the business portion seemed unclear since it was not established how the business was to inform you and there were no penalties listed - unlike some of the other infractions mentioned.
