I picked up a used 870 Express today. It has two problems I am trying to sort out.

It is covered in small spots of rust (like it was left in a hard case too long) that are proving difficult to remove with a bronze brush, RemOil and elbow grease, and the "nut" that holds the forearm assembly together won't budge.

I think I need some better rust remover than gun oil and maybe some steel wool. Any ideas on a good oil or solvent to get rid of the rust but leave the finish?

And as for the nut, I usually use a plastic paint scraper I cut to fit on all of my other 870's but it isn't working on this one. I tried soaking it as well as I could (the wood forearm is attached so I don't want to submerge it) and using pliers to bust it loose but it won't budge. I've never seen one this tight!

Thanks for any help.

I use 4/0 (0000) steel wool and whatever gun oil is handy for rust removal. Then Johnson's Paste Wax to help prevent reoccurrence.

As for the forearm tube nut, you need the proper tool and some experience with removing/reinstalling troublesome forearms. PM me if you want some help with it for the price of postage...
