Old Army and Kirst Konverter

And a newbie question...

I own a Ruger Old Army and I am very proud of it (what a nice toy).

I am looking for a Kirst Konverter.

What kind of powder is in their cartridge ? Black powder ? Smokeless powder?

Do you have any experience with that Konverter ?

I don't have one, but Kirst literature says
"The cylinders are rated "For Black Powder or equivalent loads only," which includes the current Cowboy Loads on the market."

Commercial Cowboy loads and load data are for smokeless powder. Not very much of it, but still smokeless. The cartridge is .45 "Long" Colt, not hard to find.

Not sure what you mean about what powder is in the cartridge, but with the converter you can shoot 45 lc loaded ammunition. They instructions caution to use only "cowboy loads" which just means not high pressure loads. This is not a real limitation however. I reload my own ammo to standard loads. If you wanted to you could also reload with black powder, pyrodex or whatever you like.
I love my Ruger and shoot BP with the standard cylinder and smokeless cartridges when i don't feel like cleaning up.

As far as the Kirst converters go, they are excellent. I have shot a couple of them in ROAs for a couple of years now. No problems. I like the groove for the hand too. It lets the converter slide right in. I shoot BP in my 45lc, but I have seen a pard shoot smokeless with light loads. They are very accurate and I build my cartridge loads as close to my C&B loads as I can, since I have filed my sights for CAS, which is all I shoot.
