Brass or steel frame?
Note how much forward & aft cylinder play there is (I.E. see how much cylinder gap you can create by pulling the cylinder back).
Look at the arbor where the cylinder gap is. Is there any gas cutting?
Is the arbor loose? What shape are the nipples and hammer face in.
Hold the trigger back and rapidly cock it about 10 times in a row to see if the cylinder over travels.
Is the bore rusted?
What is a 4150?

2nd Hellgate

I have several old ASMs in like new condition, Walkers. They typically go for $300-$350, sometimes more IF cased and IF they have Colt markings on the barrel and cylinder. If the Navy you found is in not like new condition or worse I wouldn't pay more than $100, if that. I recently tried to pawn one like the one you found, and they didn't even want it.

ASM had a rep for soft parts. If the trigger pull is rough odds are good it's burred up. As above, check for cylinder play and lock up. Might need to look at the hand for burrs.

There's rusty and then there's RUSTY.

If it is just surface rust with no pitting, its a steel frame, the mechanics seem good (see above) and you are looking for a shooter not a show piece, then $41.50 is OK.

Now if they want $4150.00, or even $415.00, I would try not to laugh too hard as I walked out the door.

It's a metal frame.
Tight.

You're right, buya Cabelas they're still made!
You guys helped me decide a lot!

Cabela's has the more historically correct Pietta steel framed 1851 Navy in .36 caliber on sale too, for $179.99.
