Old Carry Cases

I inherited a couple of boxes of soft cover carry cases and leather holsters of varying sizes. Other than a few I can use to transport handguns between home and the range I have no use for them. My understanding is those types of cases should never be used for storing guns. So are there any good uses for them or should I chunk them in the trash?

Leather is a no. Leather continues to breathe off the tanning solutions.

Soft cases, are no as well. They have range, cleaning, or rust residue from hosting previous items in the cases.

I collect them... not a huge collection, only 4-5, but I’m always looking for ones that suit me. I like the older stuff. So... don’t chuck them cause there are those that like them.

I tend to find a case that suits each guns personality and keep it with the gun too. I have an American mountain supply case for my model 94 Winchester. It’s great quality. Wish I’d bought some more before they sold out.

I have quite a few soft cases for handguns, many out of suede or leather and do not see any reason why a soft case should collect more dust than a hardcase. I have a few of the Browning soft cases with the red lining for the HP, too.

I bought this case over 30 years ago and have stored the Hammerli in it for some of that time.

I have had very much the same experiences with storing my guns in soft sided cases; many of them still in use after 35+ years.

For added protection you can always wrap the gun in a silicone gun cleaning cloth before putting it in the case.

So are there any good uses
You'll likely need to keep posting a bit more, and for the the "long enough" to see the "Trading Post" here.
(There's a hidden number of posts, and a undisclosed time period minimum, to prevent spam & scam).

But, as our esteemed @Pat Riot points out above, that would likely be an excellent way to put the surplus cases to some good use. (Do remember to include your State in the title, and photos are always better.)

Cases that are suitable size are used by axe nuts for storage and moving. I do not have an axe problem.... but I want to.

I have guns that have been stored in soft cases since the 70’s. However, I did rub gun oil into the interiors on day one. And then refreshed with a few drops every decade ir two.

Well, you could try and use them "to transport handguns between home and the range"

That's what they're made for.

I spray the insides/outsides of anything that holds a firearm with silicone. And haven't had any rust on anthing that's been rubbed down with Ballistol.

I prefer the carriers with handles and made rectangular rather than triangular.
I have one set aside as my Gun Show bag. It has a magnifying glass (for looking at little markings and stamps), a set of small screwdrivers - I ask prior to unscrewing stuff, a couple paperback references, a portable bag of hand wipes. And it has space for the odd collector type ammo boxes or 'stuff'.
Another is a document carrier to keep documents from getting all crumpled and dirty. To be honest, it's sort of a man purse.
Still another is my Bible and church literature bag. Keeps my Bible from wear and it's always handy.

They are handy size for 'stuff'.

I have been storing my handguns, rifles and shotguns in soft sided cases for decades with no issues of any type.
Wipe down with an oily rag slide in case and store in a climate controlled area. Zero rust or scratches.
Most get transported to the gun club in the same soft sided cases.
I do have some stored in hard cases as well and I invariably use hard cases to transport rifles and shotguns when I go hunting.
I just checked and all of my scoped rifles and handguns are in hard cases.
