Old Colts vs Old S&W's?

Why do old Colts command higher prices than old S&W's of the same caliber and vintage???

Supply and demand.
There were more S&Ws made because they were better guns.

They both made excellent guns and about the same number of them. Colt just didn't use as many names as S&W. Smith would virtually have names for each caliber while Colt just had a model name that came in various calibers.
It is a matter of supply and demand and the demand has been for the Colts.

I know of no Colts commanding the prices that the Registered Magnums do ($3,000-$10,000 depending on variables) so I am not sure of the validity of your position. How old? Which models are you comparing?

The last gun show I was at there was a unfired Colt SA 1st. generation that lettered to the Seventh Calvary that was priced $44,000! Bobhwry said old "Colt's" not just old Colt DA's.

My perception is collectible S&W's fetch a higher price than collectible Colt's.

Unless it's a ubiquitous mod 10 .38, they're still pretty high. 5 years ago that wasn't the case.

Even if you want to just look at double action revolvers there are some New Service Targets and Shooting Masters that bring the high dollars.
There are some SAA that will bring close to $100K.

There are a lot of collectable Colts, and a number of high priced Smiths... but it's not fair to compare a Registered Magnum to a Colt Walker.

Colt dominated the market for a long time.. and there is a mystique with the name connected to the old west.

Pre-war examples of both are some of the finest arms ever crafted.

I've always thought Colt handguns were overpriced. Although I like the Colt single actions, to be honest I can't afford them so am very well contented with my Rugers. When it come to double action revolvers though, regardless of type, hype or price, my vote goes to the S&Ws every time. Aint nothing smoother or slicker than a good worn in by shooting double action Smith.

S&Ws are like beetles. As the biologist once said, "God must love them, because he made so many of them."

I can pretty well list in my head most of the Colt handguns that have been produced in my lifetime. I can't name the S&Ws that have been produced in the last five years. Trying to remember them by model number is like trying to remember all of the parts in an M113 by NSN.
