I've seen some adds recently on GB in the antique section with these H&R revolvers chambered in .22 rimfire. I'm guessing that is what we now call .22 short. They're break top double actions. Would be neat to have something 100+ years old. Are these things worth a crap though? I know H&R is a cheap gun. Still it just seems neat to me to have something that old to play around with and not be worried about historical value

H&R's in .22 will either be in .22 Long or .22 Long Rifle, so far as I know they never made a revolver strictly for use with .22 Short. Given the difficulty of sourcing .22 Long ammo most those models will ever see shot from them is .22 Short.

My opinion of H&R revolvers is, after purchasing four of them and currently in possession of three (one, a 732 had timing issues) is that those made pre-1942 are fine guns if in good condition and haven't been fired much. The issue with .22 is because it has been so cheap and available for so long, those would have been shot the most, so if you want to buy a .22 H&R, get one that looks almost brand new.

Really, the best caliber to get if you're going to buy an H&R is 32.

The 999 Sportsman models seem to be good quality and command a high price for what typical H&R revolvers go for, but you want to know about the turn of the 20th Century models and for those, unless it's got the caliber marked on the side of the barrel, they're black powder only models. You could shoot the CB ammo from them, but they're a bit costly compared to bulk .22 LR.

If you have a C&R or don't mind doing a transfer, the only non .22 Long Rifle revolver H&R made I think is worth getting today is the Young America simply because of it's incredibly diminutive size. For everything else, go .22 LR, there's no benefit even with the smaller framed top breaks to choose .22 Long over .22 LR.

My niece turned 18 this past summer. For Thanksgiving, I gave her this one which was made in 1939. Along with ammo and two speed loaders.

Every girl needs a nine shot HR. She was super excited and had to show everyone that showed up to visit.

I hace 2 - .22s (922 and 929) and 1 - .32 H&R Premier, the .32 is from 1906 there about, all three shoot, the .32 is still being tweaked to get timing just right, but the .22s can be shot DA or SA all day.

That's a really nice gift. H&R 999-style revolvers from that era were just beautifully made.
