Old hi-cap (actual standard capacity) mag price update

I thought I'd post this as public information here. I just got off the phone with CDNN Investments in Abilene. They typically have mags for sale at very reasonable prices. SIG mags for $24, Glocks for $15, etc.

I asked him what their supply/price situation would be after the AWB expires. They said that they would be selling old hi-cap (really they are standard capacity) mags that are LE-marked that they have been stock piling for some time. He said they would cost more than their 10-round mags.

So it sounds like until the mag producers start supplying lots of mags to the retailers, the retailers are going to charge steep prices for these standard capacity mags. We will have to let market forces bring the price down, which will only happen once the product supply from producers and competition among retailers increases.

I was hoping to buy a few mags right away but it looks like I'll have to wait until they are more reasonably priced. It would be nice for a forum member to post a thread when a reasonably priced supply of standard capacity mags is discovered at a retailer.

Supply vs Demand I guess. The demand will be high right away, so the prices will be high. But as soon as demand fades they'll start to supply for a cheaper price.

I think the dealers will want to dump there stores of 10 round magazines as well.

As many others have said, depending on how high the premium is, I think I might just buy a number of these "LEO Only" marked mags just 'cause I can.... I think it will make a nice reminder of what silly things Congress can do if left to their devices.

If Glock mags are what you are looking for, I pre-ordered mine for my Glock 19 over at www.DoubleTapammo.com for $22. I believe that www.TopGlock.com is also taking pre-orders for around $26. The mags will be NIB but marked LEO. The ATF says they will be legal after the ban drops.

That's great news, Feldhege.

I'm actually looking for SIG 229 40S&W/357SIG mags. They are about $60-$80 right now. I'd love to get them for $25-$30, but that may take a while. They are only 12 rounders too, so spending an extra $30 for 2 more rounds doen't make sense to me, but that's another subject......

A shop in my area says that on Sept. 15 they will sell their stock of LEO marked normal-cap magazines to anyone -- at the LEO price. Their Glock mags will be about $23.

I'll try to buy LEO mags for all my guns in the hopes that gun owners finally get it together to make these things become collector's items!

CDNN often advertises their LEO mags in Shotgun News and the prices listed seem very reasonable compared to what I remember them being pre-ban factoring in some inflation.

No marked mags for me, thanks. I don't ever want anyone to question
the legality of any of my firearms related equipment. A small price
difference is not enough reason for me to take a chance down the road.

Have a friend currently in Federal Court over a difference of opinion with
the ATF. It may or may not go to trial but the costs are still mounting up.
In my opinion, do not ever give anybody any reason or chance to make
your life difficult, particularly to save a couple of bucks.

Keep things as simple as you can, your lawyer will appreciate it.

I don't want mags labelled LEO only.

In ten years, I can see a policeman unfamiliar with the ban not realizing that the mag labelled "LEO only" doesn't mean anything. Sure, I expect the problem would be easily sorted out, but it might take a trip to the jailhouse until someone who knows can straighten it out.

Since the ATF has rule-making authority, I'm leary of buying anything they can easily rule verboten at any time... and the Lautenberg amendment to the FOPA '86 proves the viability, even in defiance of the US Constitution's protection against retro-active penalties.

www.fourfourmag.com is pre-selling used Glock mags pretty cheap, and some other odds and ends too.

The owner of double tap ammo contacted the ATF and checked it out. I am taking his word for it at the moment. I did ask at the time I ordered. I know Topglock.com also checked and they got the same response. I have not heard from the ATF directly. I have one preban hi cap that I will be using for CCW. The others will be for IPSC and the range. I guess from the research I have done (nothing too hi tech) I feel it will be ok so I ordered them.

The AWB is what created these LEO hicap mags, when and if the ban goes
away there will be no Federal law making their possession a crime.
The BATF really has no legal position in this matter.

In any case, I still will not have any mags so marked. I do not want to run into
some LEO that thinks mags marked that way are illegal. In my opinion the
risk is not worth the few bucks I might save.

Hopefully, the price of 10 round mags will drop to almost nothing after the AWB sunsets. You can never have too many range mags.

Go wild, remove them. They'll carry as much legal weight as a stamp that says "MARTIAN NAVY USE ONLY". Or, heh, "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" on USGI 1911s.

Also, those of you freaking out, go read some of Wildalaska's posts. Expect no trouble from the BATFE.
