I'm not sure if this is the right place for this or not, but couldn't think of a better place.

My grandfather went into a nursing home recently, and I helped my folks clean up his place since it will be empty for a while. He's not doing too well but that's another story.
I brought a few things home with me, as he wanted us all to take what we wanted. I felt pretty wierd doing it, taking his stuff like that. These things aren't any fun.

Anyhow, the first thing is, I believe, an old machine gun ammo box. I haven't a clue how old. I was hoping someone would recognize it. The only markings are three arrows stamped on the inside bottom, and "CHEST 49-1-8(?)" on the front under the latch. There is a groove cut on each side of the front with a steel pin at the top of each groove, and a cutout on the bottom front. It looks like it was made to fit on an old machine gun of some kind.

In the second photo is a leather pouch of some kind, perhaps Japanese. Stamped on the top is his name, then "3rd MRS 1945 Yokohama Japan"

Mostly I was just curious about the old ammo can, thought there might be some experts here that would get a kick out of it.

My grandpa is dying. It's a tough time for our family, but it's also sad to see a generation passing away before our eyes. The "greatest generation" that fought and won the war, and did so much for this country will have passed into history completely in not too many years. I have always been fascinated by WWII, and only in recent years has my grandfather talked to me about his experiences.

Condolences on your Grandfather. To try and understand what they went thru, read "Citizen Soldier" (Ambrose) and "With the Old Breed" (Sledge). We're slowing losing my father-in-law who was USMC on Okinawa, so I understand your pain.

The pain passes, but the memories remain. Good luck.
