I have a rifle, actually it's my favorite .22 rifle, that needs a little tweaking for me to get the best use from it. It's a Remington model 34 N.R.A. Target, tube magazine bolt action ".22 short, long, and long rifle" made sometime between 1932 and 1936. According to the Remington website they actually made an N.R.A. Junior Target but the rifle doesn't say junior anywhere. It has a nice Lyman peep sight and is the most accurate .22 I've owned. It works perfectly though the finish is going mildly brown headed for plum. It's not an especially valuable rifle... probably worth $100 or so on a good day... but I compared it against my other .22 rifles (both semi-auto) and this rifle was far and away the most accurate. I've been considering finding good homes for the other two and calling this my only .22 rifle (at least until I can find a CZ or similar at a good price).

The only problem is the length of pull. On the theory that a picture says 1000 words:

The butt is extended a little over three inches in 3/4" segments. That's the lighter section of the buttstock. The owner either added 3/4" at a time or they took it out by three inches by cutting sections out of a plank. That's three inches without any sort of buttplate by the way. It's about a 16.5" LOP as pictured and it used to have a buttplate that added yet more. The (now deceased) owner was a bit on the tall side... in the 6'5" range according to his son. The forend was also widened, which is why the stock bulges under the action. These aren't new changes...I'd guess the gun was "enhanced" before WWII. The son didn't know much about it.

I could just cut this stock down to a more reasonable length. I haven't because part of me has a hard time taking a saw to an "artifact" even when it is as useless as this one. I could buy and set about fitting and finishing a new stock: http://www.gunstocksinc.com/web pages/Plate Pic's/Reminton Stocks/Rem mod 33 descrip.htm That would leave me with a useless but amusing stock and a lot of fun work in fitting the new stock. The unfinished stock is about $60 For a long time I was planning to just get used to it (not easy) but now I'm thinking it would be nice if it was usable by smaller people.

Any thoughts?

Why not just cut the stock back to original length and add a plastic buttplate? I would guess that the plate from a Remington 510 or 511 would fit.

Well, I've done it... I've chopped the stock down to a more reasonable length. Well... I have some file and finish work yet do do to dress up some of the lines and get everything oiled but I can actually mount it without feeling like I'm 6 again.

Does this qualify as a double-bubba?
