I got a used Remington 572 Fieldmaster in trade the other day, but there's no serial# whatsoever on this rifle. It's not defaced or anything, I did not see any signs of that magnitude. I simply cannot find it anywhere on the receiver or barrel. This gun looks to be fairly old, and I assume when Remington used to make them they didn't always stamp on SN?

Fairly common

I don't believe serial numbers were required on long arms until the passage of GCA 1968 or some other bit of federal legislation.

I got this in a trade so I didn't think anything of it, but what if i have to sell it out of state, what would the FFL put on the 4473?

I also have a 22 rifle that dates prior to 1968 with no serial number. It actually was made in 1968. As was said, serial numbers were not required on 22 rifles prior to the 1968 Gun Control Act so you started seeing them on 1969 production.

I have 60s production shotguns without serial numbers, either. Numbers weren't required on any long guns until 1968, not just 22s.
