old school ammo for 357

The "oldschool" remington 158gr sjhp actually is one of the best performers among modern rounds (see youtube tests), too bad it apparently is discontinued.
This is very true. I handload duplicate loads with it. But I have a dwindling supply of NOS Speer bullets ...

I remember my first Ruger Blackhawk in 1962.

Factory ammo of that time was either Remington or Winchester 158 grain soft swaged SWC at ungodly pressure.

Cases stuck in the SA, and the bore leaded shut in 6 - 12 rounds.

Flat primers, stuck cases, and bad bore leading with factory ammo was normal then.

But it was real .357 Magnum!!

I got my first handgun at 15. A 357 Mag. Blackhawk. My cousin drove us down to Waseka and I bought a Herters press for about 13 bucks and dies and a pound of 2400 and some 158 semiwadcutters, primers and brass. I couldn't afford a scale yet so we made a measure out of a cut down brass case with a nail soldered to it for a handle. All my loads for years were 158 grain semi-wadcutters with as much 2400 as would fit under them.

I have occasionally carried the old Federal 357B load in my GP100. I'm not brave enough to try it in my LCR though.

Old school. That's me. I'm slowly moving to cast lead Wide Flat Nose-solid projectiles, not hollow points in just about everything. My handgun ammo-either home made or some commercial version is 312 grn cast flat nose made from wheel weights in my 44 rifle, HSM cast lead 180 grn in my 357 rifle. I reload my 32-20 revolver with commercially bought 95 grn cast lead flat nose projectiles. Next up to convert to some type of cast lead is my 30-30. The only two calibers I don't intend on converting to cast lead is my 243 and 30-06, and I'm seriously considering selling one of them. Yup, I'm old school.

PS: I'm also in the hunt for a Ruger Security Six and a Redhawk, so I can use the same heavy loads in the rifle and the revolver.

I remember when CCI made the original Lawman Ammo? They had a 140 GR .357 Magnum "Penta Point". I think it was the "Deputy" load. Dang, that was good ammo.
