Don't you have to bump forward on that 520 to get it to unlock for the pump cycle ? Nice 10B BTW !

Only if you don't assertively stroke it. As long as the forward stroke is conclusive, no problem. Baby it, and it needs a bump as you describe.

My Model 520 has a bolt release button on the receiver side -- push it forward to release the bolt/pump handle. It also has a recoil-operated action lock. As the 1909 Stevens catalog (pg. 92) says, "The slide handle is unlocked by the recoil immediately after the discharge of the shell ..." The exploded diagram of the shotgun calls out the "interia block".

If your Model 520 looks different inside, keep in mind that all sorts of parts changes were made over about 40+ years of production. The safety moved, the recoil locking system changed (and the release button moved), the shape of the receiver changed ...

" It also has a recoil-operated action lock" , ah thats what I was talking about! I have never fired one but have operated one and I noticed pulling the trigger and dry firing required a bump forward to unlock it. I never knew why till now ! Thanks.

You do only in the case of having been fired with rear-ward pressure on the slide.

If slam firing - it fires on the forward stroke and so cycles smoothly to the rear.

Definitely a training issue using in tactical or combat situations.

You'll see a lot of old-timers who trained on them and 520-30s do it to other shotguns as well.

I think most any if not all slam-fireable slide actions we had in the Army had the same characteristic.

A function of no disconnector in riot/trench guns. The deliberate, design feature of being able to slam-fire, that is.

Todd.

@Gelrir a pic of the shotgun you inspired with this thread. Bought a broke down Western Field 30 (a Montgomery Ward branded Stevens 520a) and restored it with 28" barrel threaded for choke tubes, then found a poorly extra barrel, cut that down and fitted the heat shield. Fun project, great shotgun! Thanks for the inspiration!
