My buddy has an old Stevens 20 ga pump, that supposedly was his grandads, and was shortened by his grandad, due to the barrel getting bent, or so the story goes. It is in real nice condition, other than the barrel is just longer than the slide tube. I told him I thought he probably ought to not let anyone see it, as I thought it was illegal. Am I wrong, or is it ok to have?

Make sure the gun is empty.

Be sure the bolt is all the way forward and locked.

Measure down the barrel to the face of the bolt to determine actual barrel length. Either use a steel tape measure that will go down the bore, or use a dowel etc. small enough to insert, mark it at the muzzle and measure the length that way.

18" or more and he's GTG, shorter than that and he needs to replace the barrel or have a sleeve or the like permanently attached at the muzzle to bring it up to a fraction more than 18".
