Tried all the Limbsaver prefit templates. Nothing quite right for my stock. I'll get a couple of red grindable pads off eBay and try out my sanding technique.

We have a Mod 12 that my Grandfather bought my Dad who gave it to me which I gave to my Brother (Because he asked for it when Dad died) who his Sons have shot and in a few years their kids will.

Be careful of shooting modern heavy loads. The Model 12 forcing cone is set up for the old paper hulls. Paper shells don't open up into the old forcing cone modern plastic overshot crimps open further out into the chamber/forcing cone resulting in a crowding condition. The modern plastics will chamber; the problem happens upon firing. Lead will often smash to fit but heavy charges require more space and barrels have been ringed at the chamber. Steel shot is no bueno por nada.

Congrats, I just picked one of these up at a gun show on Sunday. Mines a 20ga. and was built in '22. They are very cool, I think I'm hooked.

I'm not advocating doing it, but I have shot #2 steel through my '62 Model 12 Mod. choke. Also #6 Hevishot with no ill effects. No ringing of the barrel in front of the choke or change in diameter. (I checked before and after with dial calipers) I wouldn't do it if it were a Full choke. I've seen those ringed. And there is always the differences in steel from generation to generation to consider also.

So no modern shot at all? Looks like I have an excuse to buy another shotty.

I wouldn't run steel shot through a Mod 12 especially nothing larger than #4 shot. Bridging can occur with the larger steel and there have been deaths resulting in chamber bursts. Lead is mallable...steel is not. That's my advice. Y'all do what y'all want. Good luck.

Ask them about short chambers in the early guns and the forcing cone set up for paper hulls vs modern plastics.
How early of models are we talking about? I googled the subject and came up blank.

A phone call to a trusted gunsmith who owns and shoots Model 12's yeilded nothing either.

And just so I am clear that I am understanding correctly; the problem is that a 2 3/4" plastic shell doesnt have enough room to open in a 2 3/4" Model 12 chamber because of the design of the forcing cone?

Well, $10 and a pile of rubber dust later I have a new recoil pad. Guys aren't kidding when say fitting these things is a PITA.

Ended up finding a vintage Pachmayer on eBay. The old pad on this thing was poorly ground (in that it was both misshapen, and they damaged the stock) so getting the new one all set up was a little awkward. Had to dowel a bunch of old off-kilter holes, too. Guess I'm willing to say it's close enough for a first timer.
