So I pulled the stock off of my "new" '55 Wingmaster to see if I could get a better fit. I had noticed that it was sitting a little high and tight against the receiver.
When I pulled it off, there was no bearing plate underneath. I had replaced the stock after I got it since the original had no recoil pad and also had a large chunk missing at the wrist. I used a stock that I had refinished and installed a nice Pachmayr Decelerator.
I retrieved the original stock to take a look and sure enough the stepped area that fits inside the receiver is longer than the one I refinished. In fact , it is longer than all of the stocks that I have on hand.
If I use a plate and try to fit the original stock, the gap is too large.
Question: Did the early 870's come without a bearing plate?
Perhaps this is why the original was cracked.....?
Just wondering.
