Older and more experienced: How have your handgun preferrences changes?

Long ago, when I was young my choices were the .45/1911 and a .357. Then Remington added the .44 Mag, so I did too. I see no real advancement in handgun cartridges, defense or hunting, since those three.
 
Didn't say just good marksmanship (please read) I said training; that includes all aspects. The discussion was about marksmanship not first aid and I completely agree that all the training and equipment our soldiers receive is top notch (especially the basic combat rifle), but if you are and infantryman then marksmanship is a basic infantry skill that is at the top of the list.
To quote a former CO of mine (LTG Fields) "nuclear weapons are deterrents, if your enemy shows himself at 300 meters for more than 3 seconds and you shoot him dead in the chest...that gentleman is a deterrent"!
