I picked up a book today at Ollie’s ( kinda like a new version of big lots for those who don’t know) and it got me to thinking about how their book selection for firearms related material is never really disappointing. I wonder how many other bargain shoppers here at THR have picked up reading materials there.

To date, I have gotten:
Shooters Bible (multiple)
Gun traders guide
Browning Firearms (great photos)
Pistols of the world
Small arms visual encyclopedia
Book of the AR15 vol 2
And a few others that I have read and passed along.

Today’s buy was “The Handloaders Manual of Cartridge Conversions” which tells how to form “over a thousand” cartridges” which are obscure or tough to find. 7 bucks.

I’m already regretting skipping the $4 reloading guide that they had. I considered buying a few to put into rotation here as new reloaders start asking questions. My rationale for skipping was that shipping was going to be as much as the book, but now that I’m home I’m thinking that maybe I should have bought them and then filled the boxes with other goodies. Oh well. The books had no data and were pretty basic.

Until about ten years ago, I was always able to find the previous year's edition of the Gun Digest from dealers at most gun shows at substantially reduced prices. For whatever reason, in my area at least, this cost saving option became unavailable. Then I discovered Ollie's and their selection of gun books at greatly reduced prices. I was able to buy the 2017, 2016 and 2013 issues of Gun Digest for $7.99 each; coffee table quality editions of the Shooter's Bible Guide to Cartridges for $5.99; Ruger and His Guns for $12.99; Winchester Shotguns for $6.99 and the Standard Catalog of Winchester Firearms for $6.99. I admit to buying some of these interesting but otherwise expensive "reference" books only because Ollie's made them affordable and practical acquisitions.

So when my wife includes Ollie's on her shopping tour, I no longer try to find an excuse not to accompany her, even if it means hanging out at Krogers while she redeems a hundred or so coupons at the check-out counter.

@GunnyUSMC do you ever get things so rare that you aren’t able to fire them? I understand that sometimes a recovered gun isn’t safe to shoot, but what about the oddball stuff? If somebody used a 32 rimfire or some other obscure round, what would be protocol, assuming the evidence in question is safe to shoot?

NIBIN has a database which covers 380 Auto, 9mm, 40 S&W, 45 Auto, 357 Sig, 223/5.56 and 7.62x39. There are a few other odd calibers like 9x18 and 7.62x25 that get entered. But we pretty much stick to the common calibers. But NIBIN is mainly for common calibers picked up at crime scenes.
Now the Firearms Examiners can put any caliber on the scope to make comparisons.
I have gotten in some guns in very bad shape. Part of my job is to inspect the firearms to make sure they are safe to shoot.
The Lab also has a large ammo closet with new and old ammunition in just about every caliber. The lab does get in some oddball guns from time to time.
Last year the Sheriff dept. had some homicides where an oddball bullet was recovered. We were able to ID it as 351 Winchester Self Loading. When the gun was recovered we were able to test fire it and match it to the recovered bullet.

It’s pretty cool working out of the lab.

I do like to go and see their books. A lot of really nice ones

I hate to admit it, but I used to go dumpster dive behind 1/2 Price Books. They throw out massive amounts of books and magazines.

I got a lot of National Geographic,Some shooting books, A lot of military books. I got one that Identified all the Military Aircraft from the Wright Brothers to the Second World War. Never knew the amount and different types of airplanes there were.

Yes I have gotten books and other things at Ollies. You can get some great deals there. I'll look at my local ones to see if they have that books tomorrow. Sounds like a great one to have. I passed one of the stores on the way in from the road a 1/2 hour ago. I don't feel like driving anymore today. Even with all you can find online a good book feels nice in the hands.

Now there’s a good idea for Christmas presents...
