A couple weeks ago I picked up a slightly used (looks new to me) Olympic arms AR. It runs great and seems to have been well worth the $500 I payed for it.
My question is this: How do I tell whether or not it has a chrome lined bore? The barrel is stamped 556 and SS just in front of the front sight base.
I assume that the 556 means it has a 5.56mm chamber as opposed to .223.
Does the SS mean that it has a stainless barrel?
Anyone know?

Olympic's FAQ page looks helpful but it keeps forwarding me back to the FAQ page when I try to look for more info on my barrel. Most irritating.

Thanks.

SS means Stainless Steel on an Oly barrel. My first AR15 was an Oly with stainless steel barrels. Oly barrels are often quite accurate; but it probably has a .223 chamber so you may (or may not) have function issues with 5.56mm pressure ammo (mine was also stamped 556 but had a .223 chamber - it fired 5.56mm OK though).

I wouldn't worry about the chrome-lining. A coated SS barrel is going to resist corrosion extremely well and will give you plenty of use. In fact, I just replaced a chrome-lined AR barrel with a coated SS barrel on my primary AR.

Thank you. So far it has ran fine with Federal, Wolf, and Olmpic ammo. I figured that it would run fine with Federal since it is pretty good ammo. I also figured that given my past experience with Wolf and Olympic ammo that if there were going to be problems they would surface with one of those two. They have both worked perfect so I am inclined to think that if it will fit in the mag the rifle will run on it.
Thanks for the help.

The only problem I have had using Wolf .223 (over 1000 rounds) is that it is very inaccurate in all of my rifles. This is compared to Winchester, S&B, and reloads I normally shoot. Wolf runs great, smells bad, and is wanting in the accuracy dept. Otherwise, it is good stuff.

Goon,

Please check your IM regarding one of your for sale items...tnx! - if it didn't go through you can email me.

I also had an issue with Wolf ammo in my Oly. Had to use a cleaning rod to pound out the stuck case. Won't fire Wolf in it anymore.

Jeez...
Why is it when you mention Wolf ammo that things all the sudden get sidetracked?

Thanks for the answer about the SS meaning stainless steel. That is what I thought it meant but I wasn't completely sure.
