I'm thinking of buying a Springfield Armory 1911A1 and need some advice. What is the difference between the WWII Mil-spec and the Mil-spec and can you add ajustable sights to them without smith work? The target-ported version is about twice the price. I'd really like to have a gun that's good enough right out of the box.
Thanks, Dan

See Springfield Armory's description of the Mil-Spec here. You'll have to scroll down the page, as there are five different Mil-Spec models described. I think that what you call the "WWII Mil-Spec" is what Springfield calls the "GI .45 MIL-SPEC Service Model". Basically, both guns are the same, just with some cosmetic differences, and better sights on the "modern" edition.

To add sights, you'd either have to choose sights that fit into the standard rear dovetail, or have the dovetail re-cut to fit the sights. Novak, Bo-Mar and others will need re-cutting.

Thank you, Mil-Sec it is.....

My last new gun, CZ75 40cal, shot too low (ajustable sights $60) and has the worse trigger that I have ever owned and so complicated that a normal person can't fix it (gunsmith $??). I'm hoping to get back to basics with the 45.
