My old man just passed down his ruger single Six .22 to me and I was wondering if anyone knows how to tell how old it is by serial number? He said he thinks he got it before I was born which had to be before 1972. I do remember shooting it quite a bit growing up until I was 20 or so. From what I recall it isn't the most accurate think in the world but it sure is fun to shoot. I cleaned it today which I don't think it had ever been cleaned because on the first stoke of the wire brush a strip of lead 2 inches long came out perfectly intact!! Can't really blame him though for not cleaning it as all his guns are/were field guns and just tools to him he threw in the work truck.
Anyways when I get my digital camera back I will post photos. BTW the old holster is a Bucheimer that is very cool also.
Thanks for the help.

Well there you go, it is 1972 or older. As for exactly how much older I don't know though. You may try posting the serial number(I'd omit the last 2 digits), and someone here may know.

Check the cylinder - a friend of mine shot his for 2 years (obtained the same way) with .22LR rounds until I realized it had a .22mag cylinder. Much more accurate (and safer) with the right ammo. It is only marked .22 cal and the cylinder had no markings on it so he assumed it was .22LR....

Yeah, they'll stamp a bloody encyclopedia on the side of the barrel but they can't put two letters after .22! That's Ruger for you! I've got one in stainless steel. It's obsolete, it has grips that feel like it was made for an ape, and it's a pain to unload and reload, but I love it.
