Well, seems a never ending story.

My wife and I have resigned our positions a managers at a self-storage facility in northern Virginia, leaving on 15, November.

We will be traveling to Depoe Bay, Oregon, to take care of her aged aunt.

My question(s) is/are what can I expect as shooter/hunter/gun owner in Oregan? I've already looked into CCW and am not thrilled with the procedures to aquire one, as sheriffs write their own application and qualifications, but will probably go through with it anyway.

Also, anyone of you live close? Any shooting ranges, indoor or outdoor?

Lastly, I know employment may be a little tight, but any suggestions would be appreciated.

Regards,

Bob

Welcome to Monsoon Central!

Oregon is a shall issue state. If you meet all the criteria, you get a license. So, take a 8-hour class, fill out the paperwork and a couple months later you get a license. Had my license since 1997. No silly waiting periods or anything like that. Pretty liberal gun laws here.

Don't know of any ranges in your area. However there is tons of BLM and forest land near you. Should be too hard to find a landing or clearcut. I don't really like ranges. Found some state forest land about 45 minutes from me (Salem ) Go there to shoot instead.

Excellent hunting and fishing. You are really close to prime Elk country.

Get some umbrellas. It rains a lot on the Oregon coast. But the view and scenery is well worth it.

Oregon is Shall issue.

If you have proof of a class or your military records show that you qualified with a handgun all you have to do is call the sheriff's office and fill out the paperwork, get your picture and prints taken and give them your money. They must issue or deny in 45 days. If you haven't had a class or military experience you will have to take a class. These are available all over the place, call any sporting goods or gun shop.

Oregon also has nics, there is usually about a 15 minute waiting period to buy a firearm. Not bad.

The hunting and fishing in this state is phenominal. The geography of the state makes it almost like 2 states in one. The west side is heavily forested and green and the east side is mostly high desert. Steelhead, salmon, and trout are found in many places and you will not have any problem finding people to break you in. There are also sturgeon, bass and panfish. Many people believe that the next world record Walleye will come from the Columbia River.

Offshore there are bottom fish and most years the tuna come close enough that the charter boats go out for them.

We have deer; 3 species, elk; 2 kinds, bear, cougar, bobcat, and coyote. Add to that upland game, couple kinds of quail, blue, ruffed and sage grouse, pheasant, rabbit and squirell and some pretty good waterfowl hunting. The Fish and Game department is willing and anxious to help people enjoy the outdoors and are a great source of information.

We have desert, mountain and sea shore and the open spaces are pretty amazing and abundant.

I can't help with places to shoot or with jobs in the Depot Bay area, sorry.

When you get here let me know and we can get together and swap lies. I live in Portland, so we won't be too far apart.

Give me a yell, and welcome to the state.

You can tell the people who were born here, they have webbed feet and moss growing on their backs.

Hope this helped.

edited to add:

Forget the umbrellas, most of the time we just ignore the rain and think of it as "liquid sunshine".

The coast is great and you definately don't need a range, just ask where the logging roads are, all the room you need to shoot out there. I am in Astoria which is a bit of a drive but if you ever want to go shooting let me know.

Oh, I am still trying to make it to the dump shoots, anyone know when the next one is?

Thanks to you all for the responses. Keep them coming!:D

As mention, we will be leaving on the 16th so, I'll be checking here until the 15th. Then won't be back on until the end of the month.

As for the invites, I'll take you up on them.

Keep the info coming, every little bit helps.

Thanks,
Bob
