Schmidt was a registered sex offender

SANDPOINT -- Bonner County Sheriff's officials released the name of a Clark Fork man who was shot to death after allegedly attacking a woman earlier this week.

Christopher Michael Schmidt, 42, died after being shot once in the chest with a .380-caliber handgun, according to Sheriff's Capt. John Valdez.

The shooting occurred shortly after 9 p.m. outside Schmidt's home in the 200 block of East Mountain View Road, which is north of Clark Fork.

Schmidt is registered in Idaho as a sex offender, although authorities do not believe the listing was a factor in his slaying. Detectives said the killing appears to have been done in self-defense.

Valdez said the name of the 34-year-old woman who shot Schmidt is not being released.

"She's pretty distraught about it," said Valdez, who does not expect the woman to be charged with a crime.

Valdez said Schmidt, who knew the woman when they worked together, passed by the woman's home at about 5 p.m. on the day of the shooting and the two made small talk. Schmidt left, but returned several hours later.

The woman and her roommate saw the man behind a bush and Schmidt apparently asked for a ride home because his truck had broken down. Valdez said the woman reluctantly agreed, but she took a handgun with her for protection.

The pair arrived at Schmidt's home, where he reportedly attacked her. Valdez said Schmidt grabbed the woman by the throat, and tried to take her keys and force her out of the truck's cab.

"It got pretty vicious and pretty violent," Valdez said of the struggle, which ended with the peal of the gunshot.

Schmidt was inside the truck when he was shot, according to a Clark Fork Valley fireman who responded to the scene.

"The driver's door was open, the passenger door was shut and there was a man slouched over. It just looked like he nodded off," said Frank Holbrook, who tried to revive Schmidt with CPR.

Schmidt was taken by Clark Fork Valley Ambulance to Clark Fork Junior/Senior High School, where a landing zone was established for a Northwest MedStar air ambulance.

Valdez said the air ambulance crew pronounced Schmidt dead. An autopsy showed the bullet nicked Schmidt's heart. It also showed Schmidt had a blood alcohol level of 0.26, which is more than three times the legal limit to drive.

Schmidt has virtually no record in Bonner County. Valdez said Schmidt has prior out-of-state arrests for rape, robbery and burglary. Idaho's sex offender registry indicates Schmidt was convicted of "assault to commit rape" in Sonoma County, Calif., in 1989.

Schmidt apparently made another bad decision on Tuesday night.

"I don't know what he was thinking," Valdez said. "Obviously he made a big mistake."

one shot-one kill

but really. as stated it is a shame this woman has to deal with killing a guy, even if it was deserved.
Somebody even considered filing charges??

I'm glad she's ok.

Well, seems in Idaho they have an alright newspaper reporter. Now...if the all-mighty NRA can just make him the head of the NYTimes...

I'm sorry the lady will have to deal with the emotional trauma of killing a man. However, it will be less than the emotional pain of being raped, beaten, or worse. She showed good judgement in taking her weapon with her.

Couldn't be.

A one shot stop with a .380? Woulda had to been something that started with at least a 4 to do that... right?

"Schmidt apparently made another bad decision on Tuesday night."

No joke. Well, he won't make any more bad decisions. Too bad the woman who shot him has to live with the aftermath, better that than she be assaulted/raped/carjacked/murdered though.

Think of it as evolution in action.
Bad decision making is an important factor in natural selection.

Liquidate the estate and use the proceds to defray any expenses that lady has with pshrinks etc.. if any and reimburse her for the ammo.

It was mentioned on the Spokane news this evening, Self defense, pure and simple.
My buddy asked a law officer if he was worried when he stopped a car and seen a gun.
Reply was: "Nope, just about everyone has one"
Now, if only other areas would follow our example!

I agree

Everyone has already stated the obvious, far better outcome this way than with a raped or beaten woman. Good for her thinking of her own safety and having the hardware and mindset to defend herself. Tragic that she must now carry the burden of taking a life, let's all keep her in our thoughts and prayers that she can come to terms with it and move on.

Living with the fact that you killed someone can't be easy, but I bet it's easier that living with being violently raped and beaten. If she would have been raped and killed, then that would be impossible to live with.

:scrutiny:

Not a factor?

Living with the fact that you killed someone can't be easy,
I know that the above is the politically correct position but it just isn't necessarily so.

I know that I would not lose a bit of sleep if I had to kill someone that tried to kill me or harm my family.

A friend at work's brother is a LEO who has had to kill three men over a 20+ year career and he has no regrets about it at all.

I served in the Army in the early 70's and never met a single combat vet during that time (all guys still on active duty who'd served in Vietnam and/or Korea) who felt bad about killing their enemies. Some still had the occasional nightmare that according to them resulted from the extreme stress and fear generated in combat but none gave a hoot about the killing.

People die. Some deserve it and the world is a better place for their passing. Wasting time and emotional energy grieving over those that need killing is silly. The alternative is to die yourself - what good does that accomplish?

One does what one must to survive. If one regrets killing to survive it makes me wonder if the one doing the killing believes his/her life is worth less than the one of the killed. If so then why kill - just lay down and die.

No regrets?

First off, I'll reiterate my position that she did the right thing and the outcome was clean. But as for having absolutely no regrets, that's not the case. You can be totally justified and know beyond a shadow of doubt that it was your only option, but that doesn't stop the three A.M. second guessing. The person who can kill without any remorse at all, ever, is a psychopath. The person who can kill, and then deal with the mental effects of being required to take another human life is normal. The one who says "no regrets, ever" has probably never been in that position or hasn't yet reached the point in his or her own mind to discuss it frankly and is protecting themselves with the knowledge of justification but not being completely honest. You can regret something and also be willing to do it again if reguired.

this may sound primitive but i think it must be done
any sex offender, particularly when it involves a child, the offender needs to be strung up by his neck until he was dead.
i think it would send a loud and clear message to everyone else thinking of doing it to leave our women and children alone

but until then i think one shot kills by potential victims is good
