satellite map

i've never been to perry, but when i look at this satellite photo with a map superimposed, i only see 4 ranges. I was under the impression there were a bungload of ranges up there.

can you guys point me to a map showing the names of the ranges? or show where you're supposed to check in for squadding, etc?

is it fairly easy to find your way around? do they give you a map and tell you what range you're on? or do you just have to look it up on a board somewhere and figure it out yourself?

it would suck to drive 1000 miles and not be where i'm supposed to be.
thanks!

There are only 4 KD ranges at Perry. And of those 4 there are only two that are really active for National Match course shooting. The larger of the two is Viale Range. It has 160 +/- targets and then there is the Rodriquez range it has maybe 70-80 firing positions. The two ranges are seperated by a range that has been idle for many years Young range.

If you look at the picture you linked, there is a main road running into the facility. You follow that all the way to the ranges. On your right is a building that is shaped like a boomerang. You will need to pick up your competitor packet, do your in processing, get your parking permit, and aks questions. The range where that main road ends up in front of is the Rodriquez range. To the left is the defunct Young range and all the way to the left is the rather large Viale range.(which is where all the 1000 yd LR shooting is done). You will only be on one of those two ranges at any given time.

For military use, Perry also has a M 203 Grenade range.

Just curious, why is the Young Range no longer used?

I was always told that Young range is no longer in use because of "fan of fire" issues. Primarily when shooters are down range on Viale they are within the safety fan of Young. It is too bad as we would have shorter days during service rifle week if we could still use the Young range.
