I spotted what I thought was an NEF .45-70 "Buffalo Classic". As I already have one, I wasn't too interested, but I saw a red sale tag on it. I was simply delighted to find that it was one of the now discontinued models in .38-55! :D

Here's a photo of the .38-55 just out of the box.

And here's a photo of the .45-70 and .38-55 together. Happy little family. :)

A range report will be posted Saturday night or Sunday AM, weather pending. :)

There was recently a set with both barrels on GunBroker for ~$500. Wish I had the cash now, as the 45/70 is one of the three possible rifles I am hoping to buy this summer.

Glad you were able to find the complementary rifle!

That and the fact she was picking off empty 12ga hulls at ~40 yards standing offhand without trouble...

I finally got a chance to head to the range and fire off the 20 rounds I bought with this rifle.

I'm now up in the air. I love my .45-70 dearly, but the accuracy of this .38-55 is simply astounding. Recoil is barely anything out of this relatively heavy rifle, and the report is milder than I thought it would be. I can shoot full power loads without hurting my shoulder one bit, which is something I cannot say about the .45-70!

I don't consider myself a great shot, but I was picking off shotgun shells one after another about 60 yards out from a standing shooting position. I ordered the dies, brass, and bullets from MidwayUSA just a little while ago - I can already tell this caliber is going to quickly become a favorite of mine.

To sum up... if you have any interest at all in this cartridge/rifle, find one and buy it ASAP. There aren't going to be any more made - mine was one of the last made and H&R/NEF said it was made in April of last year. It's a real shame there isn't more interest in this cartridge.

I handled one and decided against it - I like the "target" style peep sight more than notch sights on a single shot rifle. Judging by the quality of the two I posted about in this thread, that .45LC should be a winner with relatively low recoil.
