Dear "ol' scratch":

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the tragic shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and loved ones grieving in the wake of this merciless and random act of violence. No words can describe our horror at the murder of these innocent children and their educators, just as words fail to express our gratitude for the heroism of those teachers and law enforcement officers who responded in the morning hours of December 14, 2012. The school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary demands that we engage in a serious national discussion about gun violence, not just in terms of weapons and bullets, but also including mental health access, public safety officers, and our responsibility both as individuals and a society. We can and must act to make such tragedies less likely in the future.

This is a complex issue and we must work together to uphold our Constitution while at the same time ensuring that our communities are safe. When our children and families are no longer safe at our schools, in our malls, and in our movie theaters, then we as a country must take action.

Many Ohioans have already written in with comments, suggestions, and concerns. I will continue to pay close attention to each of your letters, calls, and emails, and on behalf of all Ohioans, I offer my continued prayers and condolences to the Newtown community. Thank you again for writing.

Sincerely,

Sherrod Brown

United States Senator

Ol' Scratch - thanks for posting this from Sherrod Brown. As a fellow buckeye, i did not vote for him nor will I ever. Thay said he is our senator for thennext six long years. I sure hope he gets smarter as he ages, but I ain't a gonna hold my breathe.

Now thar's a real politician. He din't say nuthin. Just a lot of words.

I've emailed him as well using the Ruger blanket email function but I'm going to follow it up with a personally written letter.

I've pretty much given up writing to my senators and congressmen. They always reply with a BS infused form letter; they never take a stand, they never commit to a position. I've come to see them as almost irrelevant, spineless, impotent fence straddlers. I have little faith in them to do the right thing.

I write them to voice my opinion, and that's it.

In contrast to Senator Brown we have Senator Portman

A canned answer it is true, but the contents in the can are better...

"Thank you for contacting me to express your concern about the rights of gun owners. It is good to hear from you.

As you may know, I am firm supporter of Second Amendment rights. Like you, I believe that infringing on the rights of law-abiding citizens does not address the root causes of violence in our society.

As you may know, I am a gun owner who believes in the right to bear arms in defense of self, family and property. During my 12 years serving in Congress, I received an "A" rating from the National Rifle Association for defending our Constitutional Rights. I opposed the so-called "assault weapons ban" and opposed the Brady Bill. I supported repealing both the Federal Assault Weapons Ban and the Washington, D.C. gun ban. I voted to protect the private information of gun owners; to protect state gun laws; and to protect firearm and ammunition manufacturers, dealers or importers from lawsuits and damages related to criminal misuse by a third party."

It's amazing to me that so many politicians view the second amendment and the safety of children as mutually exclusive. Every time another state adopts shall-issue concealed carry permits, that state is destined to become the new wild west, with shootouts in elementary school lunchrooms where the poor victims are senslessly shooting each other while under the mind-control of the evil Glock. At least that's what we keep getting told by these politicians. When nothing happens, you don't hear a thing from them.

Matt

I got the same canned response...gotta put Brown out for sure next time.
