ok guys we love the calibre debate on here.

if you were allowed one rifle for your DEER hunting, what calibre would you choose. I know i will have left some out. i am only using bottlenecks on here.... not because i don't think the 30-30 etc are no good, but because i don't know much about them.

If i miss it off please put it in your post.

Since it would be for deer only I chose 6-6.5mm. A 25-06, .257 roberts or the like are perfect for deer. You don't need anything bigger, and anything smaller would be good for a dual purpose gun but this is for deer only.

30-06 no doubt. From Varmint loads to 220 grns, the ole 06 does a lot of stuff real well. May not be the master, but ole jack can do it all pretty well.

308 v 3006

Grassman,
So am I.

i have voted for 7mm08. A future classic 100 gr to 175 gr. flexible widely available componants shoots high BC 7mm bullets. fast and flat up to 145gr. and a bit different to what most of my mates shoot

.270

I think you forgot one of the most popular deer rounds, the .270 is my choice

7x57, not just a great deer round, but has taken every known species of game animal on the planet.

I bought what I consider to be my only bona fide deer rifle recently and it was a .308, so I guess that I voted with my wallet first and now I've voted again.
Does that mean that I voted twice?

.30-06 does have more muzzle energy than .308, but I understand that most championship shooters in .30 cal are using .308 Win. I think the best advice would be to own both.

I agree with other posters and don't own them, but I understand from other hunter buddies that 25-06, and .270 are great calibers for whitetail.

Cheers,

Keep this going

yes i know! there wasnt't room for .270. maybe i should have left one of the others off. remember when putting it in the vote box it is between 6.5 and 7mm (6.8 i think)

Well done for all of the responses.

lets keep it on the first page so that the guys who look at THR whilst skiving at work get to cast thier votes over the week.

As much as I like the Swede, one now relatively obscure cartridge has always piqued my interest. It has great BC and SD bullets with more than enough power for all species of deer including moose. That is the 280 Remington.
I already have a good 270 Win only because the take off Remington barrels for 280 are few and far between. Good 7mm bullets still are numerous and superior to nearly everything else.
When properly handloaded, it can approach the 7MM REMAG.

"When properly handloaded, it (the .280 Rem.) can approach the 7MM REMAG."

Well - kinda, anyway. The disappointment with the .280 is that it can't get the 162/165 target bullets moving at the 3000fps. mark where they belong, and the 7 Mag. can.

:(

Everyone knows the .270 Win was created, because they didn't get it right the first time. <<Laughing as I put on my flamesuit on>>

I chose the .243 Winchester because it is what I use to hunt deer. Works just fine, light recoil, and chambered in my Browning 1885. This morning it helped me take a 5-point buck for meat.

i'm with Doc, 270 win does it all very well. 100 gr to 150 gr with very little change in poa.
