Only 10 guns...

I answered this a couple years ago when it was a new thread.

Tried answering it just now to see how my list has evolved, and I couldn't make it past #5 before I was starting to add filler and range toys I really wouldn't make it a point to buy in the next five years unless I won the lottery...

Here's the short list of guns I could actually go out of my way to get, that serve a specific, practical purpose outside of pure recreation, not that it isn't a valid reason to buy guns :) -

1. Glock 19 (EDC)
2. Colt 6920 (HD)
3. Ruger M77 AW in .300 Win Mag (All Purpose Hunting)
4. Maverick 88 (really, any 12ga pump, but I already have this one; use is bird and small game hunting)
5. Small bolt 22LR, for teaching my son and daughter to shoot.

My answer remains the same as well. I still don't own ten guns. I expect I never will own ten guns at the same time. I still think the idea of people worrying over how they could ever get by with only ten guns as one of the silliest things in the world.

My answer remains the same as well. I still don't own ten guns. I expect I never will own ten guns at the same time.

Do you have some constraint you are operating under? E.g. living in a boat. Or is your constraint the result of a specialization of interest?

Even if I absolutely hated guns I would own at least two, probably four. There are some situations that can't be avoided and which go more smoothly with proper tools.

But I'm not anti-gun, and I'm not living on a boat. I don't need to pare things to the bone.

I still think the idea of people worrying over how they could ever get by with only ten guns as one of the silliest things in the world.

Wait til you hear a group of adults talking about pro baseball.

Anyway....

I don't think anyone really worries about how they could "get by". Rather, I think they acknowledge that just getting by isn't the goal.

I blow past the 10 gun limit of this thread just on carry guns.

* NAA pug W/ folding grip. Always in pocket Just in Case. Tritium sights designed for speed not precision.
* NAA mini master (adjusted sights) - copperhead/racoon medicine for carry while tending chickens in my back yard. This used to be a Buckmark but that was heavier.
* P3AT pocket carry, flat profile, urban
* S&W 37, pocket carry, broken profile, urban
* p11, pocket/IWB carry, thicker profile, urban
* sp101 .327mag 3", light use outdoors/hiking
* XDm-45 3.8 compact. IWB concealed, short grip to minimize printing
* RIA .22TCM/9MM 4.25" single stack. IWB urban CC, Cali Legal config (for trips that include stops in California)
* RIA .22TCM/9MM 4.25" double stack. IWB urban CC, non-Cali legal config
* 1911 Gov't .45 - normal carry
* SRH Alaskan .45/.454 - dangerous animal territory, IWB or chest carry

Usually, unless I am somewhere like New Mexico, I'll have the pug and the RIA 17+1 1911. If I am worried about printing I'll drop through the XDM, P11, P3AT/37 range until I am happy with the results. Traveling to California? The non-CA legal guns stay home but I still want options for when I can carry.

That is just civilian carry, and it doesn't count the guns I tried along the way but found unreliable (pt145) or otherwise undesirable (k9). Nor does it count guns I own/can carry but don't intend to e.g. cz75, g20, g22, 3.75" barrel SBH bisley, etc. Could I gut it? Sure! Will I? Can't see any upside to doing so. Will I add to it? Hah...of course.

I reckon 10 aint enough

12 is the min number I seem to see

3 shotguns...

20 for upland
12 for waterfowl/turkey
12 for general use

5 rifles....

.22 for small game
walking varmint rifle
heavy varmint rifle
deer rifle
Muzzleloader for primitive season

4 handguns.......

.22 for small game/target
concealed carry lightweight
concealed carry heavyweight
deer rig

And this leaves nothing overly specialized for competition use.

I do understand economics.
I see folks buy the cheapest scopes, the crappiest guns........try to make do with stuff that hurts more than helps........

and many of them drive nice vehicles, live in nice homes, make good money.

There's a certain culture I've witnessed, where folks from certain areas see firearms as basic tools. They'll blow 10 grand a yr on vacations (or more) but won't spend over $200 on a gun.

Silly.

Upstate NY and Wisconsin seem to be the havens for such frugal Nimrods. Seen plenty of them in Indiana too.
And many of them deer hunt.

I don't get using junk, risking the success of a hunt, esp when bruiser bucks are to be had...........by going so darn cheap.

IMHO we owe it to the game to use the good stuff, and use it well.

Yup, my rifles wear Leupolds. And I'm cooling off in the AC since I just came from outside, patching the mangled door latch area on my 21 yr old 4X4.

Drive crap, shoot nice bows and guns :)

I'll take that clunker to the check in..........with a decent deer on the hitch haul and a cool gun or bow in the back seat. Proly be behind a guy with a $45+K diesel.........a button buck in the bed, shot by a bead sighted H&R (in the guts).

SiG SSG-308
SiG 716 DMR
SiG 553
SiG 556Xi Russian
SiG 522
Glock 34
Kimber Stainless Gold Match
Ruger 22/45 Tactical
Colt M16 - Multiple Uppers
HK Registered Sear - Multiple Hosts

If my Colt M16 & Multiple Uppers, HK Registered Sear - Multiple Hosts isn't acceptable I guess I'd substitute my 10/22 Takedown & Remington 870

Of what I have in the safe my 10 would be:

Ruger GP100 4" .357
Ruger Scout Rifle .308
Colt 6940 AR15 5.56
Springfield M1 Garand 30.06
Ruger Red Label 12 gauge
Ruger 22/45 Lite .22lr
T/C Contender frame and barrel in 7x30 Waters
Ruger SR1911 .45acp
Ruger LCP .380
Remington 582 .22 rifle

I think I could handle just about anything I might encounter with that gun group.

For what it's worth, I went about 15-20 years with only 4 firearms and was content. The only thing that was missing was a proper hunting rifle.

Not that tough.

1- Mossberg 500 with 18"bbl, and 28"bbl.
2- Colt 1911 govt model
3- Kahr P45
4- .308 in something like Remington 700, Savage 11, or similar
5- Browning buckmark pistol
6- Browning Buckmark carbine
7- AR-15

With those seven, i can honestly do everything from home defense, to bird hunting, big game, small game, disaster survival, CCW... I even have three spots left to fill my safe with "wants" rather than "needs".

I really can't think of any reason why I would NEED more than that, and frankly, the 1911, rimfire rifle and shotgun, used appropriately could cover 99% of my needs. If I lived in a flat open area, i'd want something with some reach as well.

I know we're gun nuts here, and we always want the next one, and we are always looking at just how we can justify the next purchase, but really really, in terms of actual needs (vs. wants), it's just not that tough to cover one's bases.

Here is my list. I have most of them. It is somewhat dependent on where you live:

1) Sig P226 9mm

Ten guns? I could live with that.

2) 308 bolt action. Probably Ruger Hawkeye
3) 357 Magnum Lever action
4) 12 gauge pump (possibly side by side)

That covers all the bases for me from a practical standpoint. Picking ten is a whole lot less painful!
