I was looking at some reloading data, they only give a maximum load:

Hodgdon site, 41 mag, 210 gr bullet, 700x powder.

Question: Does the omission of a starting load mean it's not safe?
(I wrote them days ago but no reply)

Thanks!

If only a max is given, do like the above people said unless it says DNR or do not reduce.

It is Alliant that provides only the max load, while Hodgdon typically shows a starting load and a max load. However, in the case cited there is only a max and only for one bullet, which I suspect means it is the only load tested for that powder. I think 700x is too fast burning to push that hard, giving you sharp felt recoil, so I would pick a real magnum powder or look for 700x reduced load data elsewhere.

Yeah I have called about several loads over the years and talked with several balastitans about loads. They have also guided me as to why some loads are bad or not to be used in certain firearms. They are an under utilized resource if you ask me.

IMO 700X is a bad powder choice for the 41 Magnum. Other slower powders will produce better results. I would not use powders faster than Unique, Universal and the like.

You already got answers on the starting charge.

I wonder if you meant powders FASTER THAN, since slow powders are the thing for magnum loads.

To avoid confusion, I believe the poster meant to say: “ I would not use powders faster than Unique....”.
