Hi all,

I've been using the old standby, Hoppes No. 9 for a while. I recently bought (online) what I thought was the standard No. 9 Solvent

It turned out to be Hoppes No. 9 PLUS: "Made especially for back powder shooters. Hoppes 9 PLUS is a black powder solvent and patch lubricant. It lubricates as it cleans fouling from the bore and protects against rust and corrosion. Equally effective for deep or shallow grooved barrels. Lubricates patches."

I don't have any blackpowder guns, but I can't think of any reason not to use the No. 9 Plus on my autos or revolver. Perhaps an extra patch to remove the excess lubricant? Any reason I should avoid the No. 9 Plus on non-blackpowder guns?

If there's something I haven't thought of, I know I'll hear about it here.

Anything Hoppes can do, PLUS can do better.... (or so the song goes....)

Honestly, I've used the two interchangeably and have never had any problems, or noticed much difference. However, on my BP guns I swab things down afterwards with Bore Butter, so maybe PLUS is intended to replace that step?

#9 Plus is not going to have any petroleum distillates in it that can react negatively to black powder fouling. Using smokeless powder lubes and solvents in black powder guns, and leaving said lubes and solvents in the gun when firing blackpowder, is a recipe for creating an asphalt-like fouling that is a bear to remove. That's the reason a lot of people have a bad first experience with blackpowder shooting and talk about how hard it is to clean up afterwards.

Blackpowder is real easy to clean up if you don't have those types of chemicals on your gun when you fire it.
