This is way too close for comfort. I boat in the town right next door and travel that road weekly during the summer to get to my boat. Luckily, it's almost always on a weekend!

WOODSTOCK, Ill. -- Authorities in McHenry County said a Wisconsin hunter was charged after firing shots that hit a passing school bus carrying children on Highway 173 in Richmond.

McHenry County Sheriff's spokeswoman Karen Groves said 35-year-old Steven Carr fired his shotgun Thursday from the Richmond Hunt Club. Police said Carr may have been firing at an animal, but missed and hit the bus.

The bullets shattered several windows on the bus, but none of the 24 elementary school children on board was injured.

Carr is charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, a felony. He was scheduled to appear Friday in bond court.

Am I the only one that is of the opinion that a felony charge for something accidental (not just this incident, but any incident without malice) is really unjust? I mean, it's not like the guy was trying to shoot the bus.

Just read a follow up:

Carr appeared Friday in McHenry County Bond Court and was released after posting $5,000 bail. He is charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, a felony, and with reckless conduct and unlawful shooting across a state highway, both misdemeanors.

Another thing I read stated there are 4 charges against Carr, the most serious is reckless discharge of a firearm, which carries a maximum sentence of three years. If found guilty, a creative judge might take away his gun privileges for life.

** Although this occurred a stone's throw from Wisconsin, it still happened in Hellinois, the most liberal and gun hating state just short of CA and MA.

About 10 years ago my mother was driving down a road next to a large wooded area, and had a bullet go through the windshield. Best guess is it was a hunter that missed what he was shooting at.

Uh, not for nothing, but in my humble opinion, the guy should be charged. There is no way he could be handling a gun responsibly and hit a school bus. Period.
Especially if he was shooting at an animal.
What was he aiming at that when he missed he hit not just a vehicle but hit a yellow school bus? The mind boggles...

Yeah, but was it Elmo or Big Bird he was aiming at?

Good Lord, man! You took a subject that there was no way I could laugh about...and made me laugh!

Unless there are some major circumstances we are not hearing about in the article then he deserves what he gets for his negligence

All the hunters courses that I've taken, they have always pointed out that you have to know (not should know) where all the main roads are and not fire towards them, no matter how much you think that the bullet will not make it to the road, because they wouldn't have brought it up (and then mentioned that it is against the law to fire over a road) if it never had happened.

*PS, I can't say whether the crime in this case deserves the maximum or not.

Accidentally shooting somebody's mail box is nothing like shooting a school bus. Rights include responsibilities, and it's apparent to me this individual is completely irresponsible.

My guess is that he attended the same hunter safety course that John Kerry did. You know, he was crawling around on his belly, and took several shots at a sixteen point buck he had been tracking. Probably just forgot which direction the road was in or something.
