I was calling around to the Sherrif's department and several other police agencies today to find out if I can legally carry my handgun when I go camping here in california.

I couldn't get a straight answer out of anyone on this subject but one officer did tell me that you can carry a handgun anywhere in town here in California that you want as long as it isn't loaded. is this true?

I was thinking that if it is true, it might be good for some of us to start doing it here in California so that we can get people used to the sight of guns.

Do you think there might be a risk with criminal element in carrying around a gun that isn't loaded, that you couldn't use if you had to?

Should be okay if you have a hunting license and in BLM approved area. Go here for more info = http://www.ca.blm.gov/caso/hunting.html

Bad idea... open carry, unloaded? In public? Looks like trouble from the beginning :(

I think you just answered your own question there guy ;)

BTW, check out www.calguns.net for more California related firearms info :)

kalibear got the first part, i take a stab at the second

the answer is actually very easy and but gets very complex very quickly.

it is legal to carry an unloaded fire in public if it is not concealed (unless there is a local ordinance forbading it).

will you get stopped and talked to by the local po-po...yes, but not for a violation of firearms law.

someone will call about a "man with a gun" (loaded or unloaded, makes little difference when they are calling) and the very least they will be talking to you about will be "disturbing the peace".

i a thug sees you and is savy enough to notice that your gun is unloaded...you'll be making his day. you've just provided him with a free upgrade for his gun

Depending on the city you live in CA, you're just creating potentially dangerous confrontation w/ local patrol officers.

I think you will find it is illegal in most counties in kali. If you show a gun in public (even an unloaded one) you will likely be charged with menacing.

As for state land like the parks and such, I thought it was illegal there but I am not 100% sure.

Interestingly I walked around for years during 'Rodeo Days' in Salinas Ca. , a very anti gun Democrat county , with a 'big iron on my hip' and got no flack. Had real .45's in gunbelt. too (pistol unloaded) . Have not done it in 10 years though. State PARKS are a no no for gun POSESSION(if they see it) . State forests and BLM land are ok if you have valid hunting lic. or in immeadiate campsite . But the unwritten rule is NOT AROUND POPULATIONS. The written rule is not in inhabited areas other than your private property or inside your home or your business.

And in dip-wad places like the Bay Area, you can't even carry on your own property near the boundary where it could be seen by others or that would be interpreted as "menacing". Same goes for holding a gun inside your home in such a way as to display it to people outside. What a bunch of a--wipes we got running this state.
