Open Sights at 50 Yds with a .22

What is your approximate average group size with open sights at 50 yards with a .22LR rifle with the forend on some kind of rest?

I know it will depend on the rifle, ammunition, etc. so lets assume we are talking about your most accurate .22 with open sights.

I'm just starting out shooting and I'm trying to set some goals for myself so I want to know how well other people are shooting. I have been seeing my groups improve at 25 yards over the last 5 times to the range and I want to start increasing the distance.

Not all iron sights are open sights. Open sights are notch-and-bead. I rarely bother to shoot open sights from any other position than standing, unsupported.

Aperture (peep) sights are a different matter. With my CMP Remington 541-x, I can routinely shoot inch groups at 50 yards, and better with premium ammo.

A wally-world Ruger 10-22 w/ 22 inch barrel...easily 1"-2", even better if I really do my part.

I can shoot between 1 and 2 inches at 50 yards with WolfMT and my Marlin 925, open sights (notch rear / blade front).

With scope that same combo will shrink to 1 inch, and often less.

* 7 shots per group.

I have a target in my office at work that was 30 yards out, bolt upright with iron sights that measures under an inch with cheap Wally Mart ammo.

Thats with a nearly 30 year old .22LR M1 Carbine replica that I've had since I was 10 though...lol

Just to clarify, I do mean open sights, not aperture sights. I have a Winchester Wildcat with open sights.

I shoot my Henry with a tang/globe sight combo, and my eyes are really bad. If I take my time, I can shoot 5-inch groups offhand. Shooting from a rest, I can shoot 1-inch groups.

I know a guy that can do 2-inch groups offhand at 50 yards with factory buckhorn sights on his Henry GoldenBoy.

Unfortunately, as one gets older (typically, over 40) eye muscles lose their flexibility resulting in a loss of what is called accomodation. In simple terms, you lose rapid focus ability. The eye can only focus on one plane at a time. With loss of muscle flexibility, the eye cannot swith rapidly between two planes (the front sight and the target). A few months ago, I wanted to zero an AR. Got all set up at 25 meters with an "official AR 300 meter zero target (done at 25 meters). I even put a small orange dot on the targets aiming point. Got in the prone position with sandbags, locked and loaded, focused on the front sight and came to the realization I could not see the target. Had to focus on the target, and approximate when the blur that was the front sight was centered in the peep. Managed to zero with 2 three shot groups that were smaller than I expected (about 1-inch). Bottom line, I probably could no longer use iron sight at 50 yards and get a respectable group when off-hand or off a rest. I simply cannot focus properly anymore.

Although I'm able to get 0.5"-1.0" off of the bench with my CZ 452 Ultra Lux/Wolf Match Extra that I use for O-Class CMP Sporter, it isn't used for bench shooting and I can only get 1.0"-2.0" prone which is what I chose.

Generally 1/2" to 3/4" @ 50 yds. with CCI Standard Velocity. Ten (10) shot groups.

Mossberg model US-44 with Mossberg S-100 rear sight. Shot from prone position with sling... no other supports.

Was actually shooting my .22's at 50 yards on Sunday. Don't know what kind of quality these pictures will be though lol.

Ammo type was a Mixture of Winchester White Box Hollow Point, CCI MiniMags, a batch of lead solid tips with a "U" stamp and same cartridges with a gold wash on the lead (Varitable grab bag of ammo types lol)

Firearms used on this target were the following:
Henry h001
Savage Model 7
Ithaca Arms Model 72 Saddlegun
Remington 511 (which was having it's new front sight adjusted until I get the scope for it)

All of them except the Henry were being fired for the first time since I got them and cleaned them up. Standing position, raining and windy... Perfect day for shooting lol

I haven't shot open sights with a .22 in many years now. I have a Ruger 10/22 and a Marlin 81TS. Both rifles have Bushnell 3x9 scopes on them. With the scopes even with my old eyes I can shoot pretty nice tiny groups.

Sorry, I've been switching to iron sights with apertures for my shooting. I don't like the "open" style sights- the only rifles that I have that have that style are my Mosin-Nagant with the tangent sights and my Marlin Camp Carbine with the standard iron sights. I'm constantly upgrading- only the Mosin-Nagant will retain it's irons, eventually. Still trying to determine the best system for the Camp Carbine...might just go with a red dot set up, and retain the open sights...probably the best/cheapest solution, in my case.

Couldn't tell you what groups, though. I rarely shoot at paper targets (except for sighting in). I much prefer reactive targets of various types.
