There's something about this game.

I mean, I have a bunch of games that have 10x the graphics, smoother controls, better sound, etc.

And yet, there's no other game where you have so much freedom. In one mission, you're a specops type, assigned to infiltrate a Soviet encampment and destroy at least two tanks. You're well behind enemy lines, and they're not expecting you. In fact, with the exception of a couple of perimeter guards, all of the troops and tank crews are standing around a big fire having a bull session.

So what did I do? Crawl in and plant satchel charges? No way. I snuck up to a T72, and hopped into the gunner's seat. I mowed down the Reds with the coaxial machine gun, destroyed the other tanks with the main cannon, drove the tank away, got out, blew it up with a satchel charge, and walked to my extraction point.

You just don't get that in other games.

I've been fiddlin' with the mission editor. Pretty steep learning curve in it; you've got to do scripting, and to write a briefing you've got to do some HTML stuff. BUT...there are so many addons for this game, I've really upped the ante. For exmaple, my preferred weapons loadout? A well-done FN-FAL rifle, binoculars, and a S&W M66 .357 as a sidearm.

I've also downloaded an addon that adds UN troops, blue helmets and everything. So I've been making missions where you're the resistance fighting the UN. It's a big SHTF scenario. :D

The game has flaws. The graphics are very dated looking, the controls can be jerky, and the game does not model indoor combat or CQB very well at all. Hopefully these will be improved in the sequel, which I believe is supposed to be released in 2005.

But, if you're interested in what's probably the most realistic depiction of infantry warfare available, I say pick it up. You can probably find the Game of the Year Edition for $20.00 now.

The Resistance expansion is sweet as hell. Perfect SHTF scenario. Start out with crap and start getting more and more weapons on your missions when you take them the hard way. Lots of setups for ambushes on supply convoys and armored columns and such. Damn it's sweet, one of the only singleplayer games I'll play, most suckass... Experimenting with different approaches to the missions is fun. It's also not so linear, with enemies only coming down the pike while you shoot them, you have to pay attention to the entire area. BMPs or other tanks that roll up have a real presence on the battlefield. Unlike most games where they are fodder for your 500 missles to take out. I had to hide like a mofo on several missions to keep from getting wasted by damn tanks I had either missed with any rockets I scrounged or didn't have enough to take out... Kickass game.

Too bad the multiplayer is somewhat flawed with poor netcode and a lackluster game setup/browser stuff. But oh well, what little multiplayer I've played was sweet...

The iron sights are cool too, they need to eliminate the crosshair completely...

Hmm, didn't notice that. And then if you got into multiplayer much others wouldn't be disabling it and such so it wouldn't be particularly fair (unless it was a server side forced mod...). They just needed to remove it from the game completely, and maybe work on a 3d iron sight with the actual gun model instead of a 2d image stuck up there, but oh well. I understand OpFlash 2 is underway, who knows what all they'll do with it... Can't wait.

Well, my gaming computer isn't internet-capable anyways, so I play single player only. OFP would be REALLY fun in co-op, over a LAN or other high-speed network, where you were sitting in a room with your buddies and could talk to them. Since a good human player is always better than the AI, it'd be great to see how many badguys you can take on at once.

I have high hopes for OFP 2. I don't think it'll ever be a rainbow 6 type CQB game, but I would like to see smoother application of indoor movement and the ability to allow teammates to go inside of buildings and clear them. It'll be interesting to see if they can make a game engine that models and entire island or chunk of land, miles across, (granted, the islands in OFP are pretty small) and yet at the same time model a small room, all without any extra load times or whatever.

With the iron sights, they should remove the magnification when using them. It makes them difficult to use at close range, as it distorts your view. If they didn't have the magnification, I'd turn of the crosshair myself. Besides, I find the crosshair to be a LOT less accurate than the sights, but it is good for snap-shooting.

Also, in OFP2, I hope they make the helicopters easier to fly. The controls as are are really tricky.

And, of course, I'd like to see more weapons. I've heard the game will have historical campaigns; this is good. You can find the friggin' M4 carbine in more than enough games now, and World War 2 has already been healthily represented in games. How about a game set in the 60s? FALs, M14s, G3s, early M16s, Stoner 63s, AR-10s?

You can get just about any firearm for the game by downloading mods. My prefered setup is an M40A1 sniper rifle and a Colt M1911A1 (which is, while perfectly rendered, a little on the pimp-ish side, with some engraving and ivory stocks). You can get just about anything from an M14 to a Barrett to the Pulse rifle from Aliens, you just have to look.

Did I mention I also drive a 67 Mustang Shelby between objectives?

One of my favorites.

The Invasion1944 WWII mod is what I'm fooling around with right now. Very well done.

That's how I took care of that mission too. Take the tank and lay waste to the entire base. Interesting thing ... if you just wait around, they'll send in Spetz Natz to deal with you. If they fail, they'll send in a chopper. Not sure what happens after that. I killed the chopper and left.

Hmm, I'm almost done with Call of Duty (On Veteran) :D maybe I'll check this one out. For some reason, it's one game I've never picked up.

No, the graphics are primative, but the payoff is a huge environment and great flexibility.

Make the helos easier to fly? They seem very easy to me. Maybe you need a better joystick?

The crosshairs don't bother me. They're generally useless past about 10 feet and just give you a general aiming direction.

Maybe you need a better joystick?

Maybe I should use a joystick, hey? I play with a keyboard and mouse, so I never really got myself a joystick.

Can you start it off in a classroom and have UN paratroopers land on the field?

Yes and no. Buildings in OFP are just objects on the map; while there are some you can go inside, there's no provision in the game for indoor combat or clearing buildings or whatnot. (I hope that in OFP2 you have the ability to order your soldiers to clear a building. I'm not expecting rainbow six, but it'd be cool.)

And, there's no mod I've found that add's UN paratroopers, though with scripting you could have the UN troops I've downloaded parachute from a helicopter or plane. (I don't know how to script that, though.)

But, what I COULD make (with my skill with the mission editor), is a mission where you're just walking or driving down the street and Soviet SPETSNAZ paratroopers begin landing around you...

Here's one with Canadian and Dutch UN units:

Shouldn't be too difficult to add object "parachute", then put one of these guys in it.

Yeah, flying without a joystick would be tough. I use a Microsoft Sidewinder and find OFP helos to be very easy to fly/land/hover/etc. My earlier joystick didn't have a yaw control at all, which made things a bit rough, but this has the twist for rudder setup.

You know, I've played and uninstalled or just forgotten several games since I installed OFP, but I just keep coming back for more.

Great game, lots of AI surprises. Ex: I sniped the driver of a truck carrying troops which brought the truck to a halt. I picked off a few of the troops that disembarked and imagine my surprise when one of the troopers from the back replaced the dead driver and started the truck moving again!

Usually during computer games, for me, the objective is to see how many guys I can kill. It's not really emotionally involving, because there is no percieved risk. Operation Flashpoint is so realistic, you find yourself (at least I did) freaking out if the russkeys reinforce, they get air support, a few BMPs come. It's terrifying. Plus in this game you can actually get pinned down. Any game where you have to dodge BMPs while some russkey tovarish is firing hundreds of rounds at you (with the correct whizzzz when it goes inches above your head) while waiting for some copter airsupport and a deuce and a half for evac is a good game.

Oh, and guys... I dont know if we're talking about the same mission, but instead of going into a tank, I searched and found a helicopter. Good times, good times.

On another note, does anyone know if they are going to release Opflash 2 for Crapintosh?

Cheers,

Joystick with a FPS game? Heretic.

I love Flashpoint. Great game. The huge environment let's you go anywhere and do anything to complete the mission.

I always try as many different ways to complete a mission as possible. Including stealing armored vehicles and attack helicopters.
If you have not noticed, if you are on a map that has a helo base on it... that helo is still there even if your on the other side of the map. Snag a jeep, go get the bird, and bring it back to your objective for some Death From Above fun.
Sometimes you have to refuel the bird on the ground - but that just adds to it.

What's really fun is to jump into an APC and go bobsledding down a mountain with it cutting a swath through the trees and brush. (some trees you can knock over so be careful)
Any mission that has you destroying a tank... it's easier to destroy once you razed the Russain base to the ground and drive the tank to near your extraction zone and then place your satchel charge at your whim...
The best thing in the game (other than being able to snag other weapons and ammunition.... is the bullet's time of flight.
To shoot the sniper rifle at a walking or running target, you have to watch the breathing, watch the target, calculate the lead... it's very hard to do well.

I'm still waiting for the Ghost Recon/Operation Flashpoint cross.

One of my underlings loaned me his copy of O.F./Cold War a few weeks ago. After reading this thread I decided I should quit playing Call Of Duty and load it. Looks pretty good, given the age, but I need to spend more time with it before I pronounce yea/nay on it for my part. I keep getting whacked too quickly.

At least you don't have to go through a lot of monkey motion to get to the gameplay vis-a-vis America's Army.

Regards,
Rabbit.

Actually, you do need to complete the first elementary missions to get accustomed to the controls and how to command your troops.

Love OP Flashpoint!I've compleated it 3 times. The only thing I have trouble with is commanding a tank(T80 or M1) driven by someone else, they just don't want to go where I tell them.Usually ;) I have them disembark and take the drivers spot my self,of course, I've gotten PO'd enough that i tell them to get out and shoot them on the spot then get back in.

I don't like the tank missions much myself. The game isn't a tank simulator, really, and being the tank commander can get frustrating.

I prefer to be on foot.

MAN, those M1 tanks are tough. I hated the things playing the Red Hammer campaign. (Loved 'em in the American campaign though!)

The TANK MISSIONS... these are some of the BEST missions in the whole game. I love them. The blend of Armor and Infantry makes OFP unique. I love the tank missions!
An M1 Abrams rolling across the battlefield is a scary scary thing!
:D
