Hi,

I'm in the market for an economical .22 and have decided on the Ruger 22/45 Mark III.

But I am undecided if I should get the 4.5" slabside with fixed sights or the 5.5" and was hoping for opinions on the two. I can get either for about $278 from my local dealer.

I hear that the 5.5" can be just as accurate as the 6 7/8" but what about the 4.5"?
Also, I find it odd that they will put adjustable rear sight on the 4" but fixed on the 4.5" Can I put the ajustables on the 4.5" later if I want?

Thanks,
Don

Excellent weapon. I own three and enjoy them very much.:)

I find them excellent training weapons for beginners and girlfriends. In fact, I just used one this weekend to train up a young and nubile.:D

One recommendation, there is a replacement bolt assembly screw that a gunsmith in New York sells. Buy that and install it. It makes the weapons very, very easy to strip and reassembly.:)

Buy It!

Being new to firearms I was looking for a very cost effective way to train so my first hand gun was going to be a .22. I purchased my 5.5 inch, Mark III, 22/45 in late Jan 2006. As of today, I have run 21,450 rounds through it. I buy Federal 550 Round Value Packs (about $9.00) at Wal-Mart and practice, practice, practice......

It is VERY frustrating to field strip and clean but you will get the hang of it. I changed out my front sight to a HiViz and left the rear stock/adjustable. No real change on the front sight indoors but a HUGE difference outdoors. I also added a rubber Hogue slip on grip. I felt it was too narrow in my hands. Now it feels closer to the width of my 1911, but still slightly different.

Finally, I had a local smith do a trigger action job on it which further improved my marksmanship.

Enjoy!

Is there a drop-in trigger action/assembly for this great pistol? thanks.

One more question, this may be a bit OT. How does the black finish of this pistols hold up to abuse? Or if given a choice, which would you get - the stainless or the black finish? thanks

My action job was just a slight polish....not sure what else is available
but this alone smoothed out the trigger pull/press.

As for the finish, yes my black has some very slight wear on it and I don't even use a holster with it. If you are to work from a holster than I would recommend the stainless.
