Hi all,

I'm a new shooter, and I've found myself addicted to skeet already. I'm currently using my 870P for skeet, but would like to get a quality semi-auto to really learn the game on.

I'm currently considering the Beretta AL391 Urika (competition) and the Remington 1100 Tournament Skeet. I like the fact that the Beretta has the shim adjustable stock, but I like the fact that the 1100 comes with a 26" barrel. A 26" barrel on a semi-auto is roughly equivalent to a 30" barrel on an O/U.

So... then I see this new Beretta Extrema2. Nice looking, shim system, 26" barrel, Beretta reliability, approx same weight as AL391, etc. I also like the fact that it has a lot or recoil-reducing features. Recoil doesn't really bother me, but being a new shooter, I would think the least amount of recoil is best for learning skeet.

A few of the things about the Xtrema2 that might not be great for skeet: since it's a field gun the rib is skinnier and might also be a little angled to make it shoot higher which is not good for skeet.

What are your opinions on the Beretta Xtrema2 for skeet? Does anyone currently use one for skeet? If so, I'd love to hear your opinion. If not, a theoretical opinion is welcomed as well.

Thanks a lot for your on-topic replies!

It's a very poor choice IMHO. The Xtrema 2 is a 3.5" gun and better suited for waterfowl. I know a couple of people with Xtremas and when they've used them on the clay fields to practice their guns don't function reliably with light loads. I wouldn't choose the Xtrema unless I felt a need for 3.5" shells and they have no place on a target range.

I'd stick with the AL391. I use one as a back up clays gun and for waterfowling. It feeds light 7/8's target loads and 3" duck loads reliably.

Wow! I've heard nothing but good about the reliability of the Xtrema 2 with ANY load. The gun that I've heard has problems with light loads is the Benelli SBE.

My impression is that though the Xtrema 2 is a bit of overkill for the target range that it would be just fine. Not perfect but a good dual duty gun. I would get it in the 28" however.

Bruce Buck considers the Extrema II a good clays gun. I've shot wobble with a guy with one, it cycled oz loads OK.

Shimming an 1100? A bit of foil, toothpicks, pieces of hulls, etc will do the trick.

Extrema VS 1100, get the one that feels best....

I have not shot the Xtrema 2, but if it's anything like the Xtrema 1, I wouldn't use one for clay of any kind. I like a shotgun to feel alive and, IMO, guns like the Xtrema are too bulky to offer that feel.
