What do you like for hard, baked-on fouling?
Never WD4.I aint ever used water based solvent. I like hoppes 9 for actual solvent. I also like outers solvent. For light action, Remoil or wd40 does pretty good.
I don't have any idea. I never looked at the msds for either. But it seems like I always have both. Some from kits as Christmas presents and some form yardsale kits.Curious, what's the difference between Hoppe's No.9 Nitro Solvent and Outer's Nitro Solvent?
I've used both and don't see (or smell) much of a difference,
Why not? It won't hurt a gun. If you use it as a light cleaner and wipe it out, it won't gum up.Never WD4.
But it does gum up badly so it’s almost like having to thoroughly clean the gun again. Why not? It won't hurt a gun. If you use it as a light cleaner and wipe it out, it won't gum up.
Don’t know the difference. Have used both but keep going back for more Hoppes. Does a gd job for me.Curious, what's the difference between Hoppe's No.9 Nitro Solvent and Outer's Nitro Solvent?

It’s primary use is to displace water, and I use it if the gun gets wet, then thoroughly clean with solvent. Why not? It won't hurt a gun. If you use it as a light cleaner and wipe it out, it won't gum up.
Just ran across an old bottle of Hoppes #9 old formula, the good stuff in the glass bottle. Don't know what is it, but the smell of the stuff is better than the new formula. Must trigger something in my head from being a kid or something.Kroil for me has been for the last 30 years and hoppes still got some of the old formula left you have to be very mature to remember when the formula got changed
I buy WD40 by the gallon and use it on lots of things, but mostly for displacing water. It certainly good for that. But I have never used Kroil before, since reading this post I just ordered some from brownells to try,I will use wd40 for something like, cleaning the soot out of a marlin 60 receiver and bolt. I wipe it dry then oil the bolt before reassembly. I don't use it a bunch, but have some.
Thanks. I have used Marvel Mystery in my vehicle engines for years, but never thought of trying it as a bore cleaner. I’ll try it.I don't use Kroil. There are some very good tests of penetrants on Youtube. Kroil doesn't win and is the most expensive. I use Marvel Mystery Oil. It has a carbon softener and remover in it plus it's a good oil. Plus, it's cheap. A win win.
