So this Pedersoli Hawken Percussion rifle is on sale at basspro for $499. From $630. Looking online at other various sites, new they all want $650-850. The only reason im looking at this is due to the price and well i want a muzzle loading rifle. I never really looked at this one before because i kind of think its a tad ugly. But maybe thats me.

However the price seems nice, i can only get the 50 cal version, the 54 is out of stock. The 50 is in stock about an hour away from me. I also have $100 in cabelas points, and if i buy this in the store spending over $250 you get $25 in points, im not sure if itll count the $500 before i used my points and give me $50 in points, but ya. I am actually debating on not even use my points and collecting the other $50, then ill have $150 in points.

Anyway, if i use them itll be $400 not counting the $25-50 in points i get, so basically itll be $375-350, if i dont itll be $500 or $475-450 with the points i earn. Does anyone have this rifle ? do you like it ? Is it worth the $500 or $400. Or should i use the cash on something else.

Honestly i wanted a 1873 SAA Uberti cattleman 2, but its also $500, get the rifle or the revolver ? Or should I get some other percussion/flintlock rifle instead ?

Is this gonna be your first black powder firearm? If so, I'd usually suggest a Black Powder Revolver first.

Keyword, USUALLY, as everything in general is unobtainium lately.

I have two 1851 navy, that ive shot about 500 rounds in both. I want a rifle for sure, but ive always wanted a 1873 SAA. But with the Pedersoli on sale AND in the store, that means im able to get 50$ in cabelas points by buying in the store, not to mention the 2% back which is another $10 in points.. So ill get $60 in points, to add to my $100 if i dont use the $100.

I guess im already telling myself to get the rifle. But i just want opinions if its any good for a first muzzle loading rifle, or if its junk

I think Perdesoli is fine as a first rifle. Enjoy.

I don't think revolvers should be the first firearm but mine was a Ruger Old Army. It took years before I got into smoke poles.

While I don't have one, I have handled one and wouldn't hesitate at the price you posted. It's a quality gun.

JMHO- I wouldn't buy something I
wasn't happy with just because of
points. You already said you thought
it was ugly, so that would be the end
of it for me right there

The Pedersoli is actually fairly close to the original Hawken rifles as far as the look is concerned, keep in mind that the plains type rifles were intended to carried part time on a horse so the stock is not a slender delicate design but more robust. It's intended to be a hard working tool of the mountain man trade so no shiny furniture and rarely a patchbox. If you're looking for a " pretty gun in a muzzleloader take a look at some custom guns or do some research into some of the late 1700 s masters like John Armstrong or Isaac Haynes, Jacob Dickert. The stuff they turned out are more artistic than the heavy plains rifles.

Pedersoli makes many different hawkens. The best ones are the Missouri and rocky mtn hawkens. Everyone i know who really gets into and sticks with BP tends to want the more original looking ones for slow twist Patched Ball (1 in 48 to 1 in 60), The others with fancy brass furniture, less than 32" barrels, or worse, a rubber recoil pad are ok but tend to be sold on rather quickly. Right now GB is loaded with TCs and similar makes by others that all look "used once". Seems only the customs and factory rifles like the Great Plains and the Better Pedersolis garner the big bids.

Well i drove to the basspro. If anyon3 is wondering its the basspro in maryland. They had 5 of them... wow.. 3 50cal and 2 54.

I talked to the manager and he gave me the 20% off for the 54cal version.

I looked at both if them to pick the one i wanted lol. Once i got it in hand i realized its really pretty and not overly cumbersome in size and weight.

Also comes with oretty good modern looking iron sights.

I git the 54 cal pedersoli Hawken. For 380$ brand new.

They also had 5 100 boxes of #11 percussion caos and 530 lead balls. And .15 patchs.

Im just going to use the 3 lbs of FFF powder i have. That should be fine right ?

You'll be fine with 3f. I shoot it in all my 58cal competition muskets. Start out with about 55gr and work up looking for best accuracy. You'll probably find it at about 70-75gr. Patch needs to be lubed. For most shooting, simple spit patch works fine. Remember to wipe between shots, especially on a new gun.

Sure here are some pics. I just realized i got two boxes of 490 balls.. for 50 cal lol i had to go to my local cabelas and thankfully they had 5 boxes 9f .530 so i swapped my two for two of them. I also realized i needed one of those ball starters that get the ball in the barrel with the patch before you ram it down.

As for patchs. I got prelubed patchs. 100 count they are .15 in size.

Question. What tool do i need to clean th3 bore out with a a cleaning patch. That HOLDS the patchs ? So they dont get stuck in the barrel. Normally for my other guns i just put a latch over th3 brass brushes. But i have no 54 or 55 caliber brushes either. I didnt see any that size in cabelas either.

Thanks for info on 3f, i have about 3 lbs left of it for my 1851 navys. And tbh i dont feel like spending 150$ for 4 lbs minimum and hazard fees for 2f right now. I could go to cabelas i guess and get the pyrodex RS rifle and shotgun fake powder or tripple 7. But i really dont want to use the fake stuff. I want authentic boom and smoke.

Yes the online pics to me made it look odd... but in 0erson it looks really nice. 8m very happy with it.

I will post a video on it shooting very soon

I'd ditch the prelubed patches. Get some patches of differing thicknesses. Lube with spit if shooting right away.

To swab the bore, you need a jag. They look something like this-

Be sure the thread will fit whatever rod you're using. They come in a variety of sizes and thread pitches.

Swab between shots. Wet patch followed by a couple dry. I use plain Windex to spritz the patch and for clean up. The chemical formula of plain windex neutralizes the acidic fouling. To clean, shoot Windex into the barrel, swab several times, wipe dry. Use windex to clean the flash channel. Using computer dry air in a can to dry is a good idea, then oil. When putting the nipple back in a percussion gun, I put a dot of grease on the threads. Nipple doesn't need to be super tight, just snug.

LIke Dave951 says, get a jag. Wrap the patch around it, submerge the barrel in a can of hot water, wet the patch and push it down. After a few strokes, you'll start drawing water into the barrel like a pump (I cheat and pour water down the barrel while the jag is in place).

Also suggested: stuck patch remover (worm) and a stuck ball remover. I have a solid one piece brass ram rod for range use and for cleaning.

Beautiful gun. Enjoy.

Okay on the rammer it came with has one of those honey comb looking Jags. So i guess ill try thwt one first..

Yes i noticed this rammer didnt have a stuck ball screw on it. So ill need to get one of those and one for patchs. Ive wondering what you do if a patch het stuck inside
