Bought a pre-war winchester mod-70 in 30-06 for $400. I thought it was worth a lot more but was told it was just a good shooter since it was drilled for leupold mounts. Rifle has a 4 digit sn. Well I decided for better or worse to make it pretty and keep it. I had the front sight removed, shiney new bluing job and built a stock of fancy walnut purchased from All American Gunstocks for $565. I put a flawless used Kahles 3x9x42 with the TDS reticle on it. The rifle shoots as good as I can and looks great. Sold the old stock for $150 so I have roughly $1550 in the package. I am happy with it, but wonder if it was a wise thing to do. I am new to this site and greatly appreciate all the good information. Comments appreciated. Thanks, Ken in Oregon

I have virtually the twin to your rifle, made about a year or so later than yours. It has one-piece mounts, and I have the orginal 7/8" Alaskan that was mounted on it (which I have replaced with a more modern scope.) The varnish is worn off down to the wood where it has been handled. The rear sight is missing -- broken off, and the dove-tail left to fill the slot. Under the ocular lens of the scope is a Redfield aperture sight as a backup.

I have simply made sure this rifle is clean and oiled, and rubbed down the bare wood areas with Old English furniture oil. It's been elk hunting with me several times.
