I own a Daniel Defense M4 V5LW and I recently bought some Magpul flip up sights for it. I have been looking at getting a red dot for it and I have been looking at the Eotech 512 and the Aimpoint Comp ML3. Anyone have experience with these or have any suggestions? My rifle is the one on the top. And yes I did put a TruGlo red dot on it just to dick around with at the range. Don't freak out people, i'm getting something better soon.

You can't go wrong with an Aimpoint PRO. $400 (pre-panic), comes with a mount, 3 year battery life of continuous function, and its just about bomb-proof.

That said, I've also been interested in the EOtech 512 or 517 models. Plus, if you have a little aptitude with electronics, its not overly difficult to wire up the 512 or 517 models to recharge from a flexible solar panel mounted (see taped) to the protective hood.

For reference, I have a CompC3 on my Noveske, and I've been fairly happy with it. 0-200 yards (max range at my range) its been more than adequate to put rounds inside of 4-5" at 200 yards with M193 5.56.

I have a bit of an astigmatism, so in low light the dot tends to smudge, but during day-time use, its a crisp 2 MOA. I've heard that the EOtechs are a bit more astigmatism friendly, but I haven't had the chance to play with one, so I can't say for sure.

Aimpoint pro or Eotech xps2-0

both are great dots for your budget. The aimpoint, better battery life. Eotech better sight picturea and better reticle.

nice rifle, by the way.

Thanks for the input guys. I have heard that the Eotech may be able to reach out to longer distances but the Aimpoint has a way better battery life. I do like that Eotech Xps2 because it isn't as bulky as the others. Decisions, decisions......

I have the Eotech XPS2-0. The 1 MOA center dot is very good for shooting smaller groups and the 65 MOA circle is nice for fast target acquisition for closer targets. I used it in 3 gun for a while. It did a fine job. The original battery lasted 6 months. The next one lasted 2 years, plus.

I like the PRO. My SBR might end up with one. For the SBR i'm not going to be shooting small groups. I would prefer the battery life. If i ever "need" the SBR i want to know the battery will be good.

This. ^^^

I've had a PRO for about 2 years now, and it's as good a red dot as money can buy. I turned it on the day I got it, and haven't switched it off yet. No buttons to fumble with and always ready to pick up and go. This alone makes it superior to the Eotechs in my honest opinion. Very clear glass and the 2 MOA dot is just about perfect. FYI - the PRO is practically identical to the 2 MOA dot version of the CompM3, except the PRO package includes the excellent QRP2 mount.

Both the Eotech and Aimpoints have no magnification. Neither will "reach out" any further than the other. It's possible to mount a magnifier behind either optic.

Well by "reach out" I didn't mean magnification. Thats kind of my fault. But by that I mean I have heard that the reticle allows for greater accuracy at longer distances but I do like the aimpoints and if the pro is as good as you say it is for the price I may give it a shot.

Another vote for the aimpoint pro. Provided long range isn't a factor.
In my experience, a standard flat top rail with gen 2mbus sight and the aimpoint leaves very little room for mounting the magnifier.

The smaller 1 MOA center dot on the Eotech does make it much easier to make out small targets at distance. I like the Eotech for shooting smaller groups past 50 yards or plates past 100. The bigger dots cover up the target.

Both are great dots.

edit: Like in the picture above, there is nothing wrong with a good 1-4x scope. At 1x you can shoot with both eyes open. the 4x lets you engage steel easily out to 400 yards. My current 3 gun set up, i use a 1-4x nikon.

Since they have unlimited eye relief, the Aimpoint red-dots can be mounted as far forward as your upper rail and mount will allow. The extended forearm rail on the OP's rifle gives him a lot of real estate, assuming it's mounted rock-solid. Since his front sight is mounted to this rail as well, I'm assuming it is. Honestly, since no red dot is a real precision optic, I wouldn't worry that much that it's not mounted directly to the upper receiver, but others may disagree.

I think the real limitation would be upsetting the balance of the rifle, since the PRO optic/mount combo isn't exactly light weight.
