Optic recommendations for AR

I need better optics on my AR. Rifle is a RRA with a flat top upper (Predator Persuit Upper). I use it primarily to punch paper at 100yds. I currently have a Nikon Buckmaster 4-14.5X40 SF with MilDot reticle on it. My issue is with the Side Focus. I really have a hard time getting the parallax adjusted with it. I can never tell when I have it set right, tried tilting my head (to see if target moves behind reticle), etc.

I would like something comparable in power. I like the Nikon M-223 and the Leupold AR series, but I dont see myself using the BDC capabilities any time soon. I'd like to stay around the $500 mark, with an AO. Suggestions welcome.

If you are only shooting at 100y then I would recommend the M223 1-4x scope. I have the 1-4x on my AR and it works great out to 300y, the furtherest I have had a chance to shoot it. At this short of a range a BDC reticle will just get in the way. So unless you just really want the higher power I'd go with the 1-4x M223 or the like. Or irons.

Thanks Gus. I have the Leupold Mark AR 1-4 on a carbine that I use a closer distances. I really want a higher magnification scope, it helps my old eyes out.

Nothing wrong with that. I like my M223 but can only assume that the higher power scopes in that line are just as good.

Maybe a redfield 2-7x32? It's a $150 leupold...what's not to like I really love that power range since it bridges the gap between a CQB optic and a precision longer range (300+ yard) shot. Another scope to consider is the Mueller 2 - 7 x 32 mm Multi Shot Scope. It has a 1moa red dot that could be useful up close and still be able to dial up to 7X. I'm looking a Redfield 2-7x33 scope for my M&P 15. If you are looking for a higher magnification, Redfield has a 4-12x40. Redfields are made in the USA, and are owned by Leupold, with Leupold's warranty. It is my understanding the biggest difference between Redfield an Leupold is that Redfield uses nitrogen between the lenses, where Leupold uses argon. Looks like the MSRP for the 4-12x40 is a little over $200.

I've got the Mark AR in 3-9X and it works fine. Also bought a Vortex red dot that came with a doubler (1X or 2X) for $150 with red/green illumination.

Either will work well inside 300 yards or so. You might like the Millett series of Tac scopes which are illuminated. Don't worry too much about parallax at the distance you are shooting, if it looks good it probably is.

Sklyerbone, just an fyi on the Vortex. I bought a SPARC not too long ago, and it quite working for me. I ordered it primarily for my carbine to be used in 2 gun IDPA matches. I didnt like the really small field of view with it, when it did work. I exchanged it for a Leupold Mark AR 1-4, and glad I did. Also, the battery for it was unique, and only available odering online.

I'll take a closer look at Millett.

With an AO, particularily the SF I now have, it seemed that if it wasnt adjusted just right, everytime I tried to get back behind the scope, the POI was slightly different, because the parallax wasnt quite right.

I use a Leupold VX3 4-12 variable on the same rifle.

Whatever you get, make sure it has the thin target crosshairs. Most hunting and tactical scopes have the thicker crosshairs. Hard to hit a small target consistently if the crosshairs cover it up completely. You can't tell for sure if you're aiming at the same exact spot. Take a look at some of the gun rags. They'll test the coolest looking AR you've ever seen. With a high dollar combat optic on it. Looks great. Then take a look at what they use to test for accuracy. It ain't no ACOG or a low power scope. They use good quality target scopes to see what the gun can actually do.

SWFA has some sweet close out deals on Burris scops as well as the Vortex Viper line. Go over there and check it out. They also have a sample list where you can get demo scopes for a great price. Their forum is also an awesome place to get advice on optics.

For the Predator Pursuit (considering its intended purpose) I'd take a look at the Vortex Viper (I believe it's a 20X) with the target reticle. They are blowing them out for around $280. It's a pretty nice scope.

right now Midway has some screaming deals on Bushnell 4200 series, higher powers.

I have a 6.5x20 Leupold on my Bushie Varminter. I thought it would be too much, but the power is good for what I do (little critters and paper). I've got one of the 4000 series on my 22-250 and muzzle loader. Excellent scopes.

Thanks for the heads up on the SPARC greg. I don't mind the smallish tube myself but I'm hoping it doesn't go belly up on me. I bought it to give myself a fun option rather than constantly working on tiny little groups. I had envisioned buying the micro unit for a .22 pistol to do the same but think I'll wait and see now.

Since you like the Leupold 1-4 AR take a look at the

Leupold Golden Ring VX-7 1.5 -6x24

or the

Leupold Mark 4 1.5-5x20mm

The Gold Ring has a little more magnification for use old eyes shooters yet retains a small foot print.

Think I solved my delimma. I just picked up a Bushnell Elite 4200 3-12X44 FFP MIL/MIL slightly used locally at a kickin price. WOOOT!!
