Seem to recall reading somwhere that velocity from most .22 rimfire guns actually tops out at between 16"-18".

Curious as whether anyone has done any testing on this?

There may be more at play than just velocity. Most target rifles tend to have longer barrels.

I have a CZ-452 with a 29" barrel. It is extremely accurate, though not moreso than the Biathlon Basic that I have which has an 18.5" or so barrel. I like the sight radius the longer barrel provides with iron sights. The BB has no option for iron sights. I wonder if the BB would be even *more* accurate with a longer barrel? They shorten the barrel on this model, probably just hack off the mount for the front sight, add weaver mount and cheap stock and *done* one Biathlon Basic. They are a great gun however.

Was that a digression or what....

I've tended to think in terms of the 18" region as ''ultimate'' .... but ... my Marlin is 22" and a tack driver ........ and my old Mauser Obendorfe bolt is IIRC about same if not longer.

Even if the powder burn is ''complete'' and max'd out by 18" I think the minute potential loss thru extra length is or maybe .. negated by the extra stability endowed. No way to prove that of course, except subjectively.

Plus ... I guess we should have to also consider the ''hyper velocity'' .22 LR offerings also.

Thanks all!

I was trying to find a logical excuse to buy one of WalMart long bbl'd 10/22's. Guess I'll have to look for some other factor ;)

Some guns with longer barrels (and iron sights) seem to shoot better; but that might not be an effect of the barrel length, but rather, the sight radius length..

So if you use iron sights, that might be one of the advantages. I see using a scope drastically negating that..
