Ord Starting the 200/400 M1's per Day

Gentlemen,
These files are in 1940 but US Ordnance is making moves to not only keep production but to double it. Large amounts of funds are moved into this Project.

Without input from you guys no one learns anything Try to put in some info/question and we can learn more of the M1's History. Your input is very important to all of us. Guys read the files if you have the time and post what you think was going on.

I went to your site just last night while trying to find out the unit cost of a M1 Garand in WW2. It looks like the initial orders average around $130 per rifle without accessories. But from the letter you posted above, the cost goes down to $80 once the factories started spinning. Are these figures correct?

The Col is providing an estimated cost, given that funding for facilities are given to get to that production rate.

This is an extremely high level summary report. You do not see the cost estimating, nor the equipment,tooling, production flow, documentation all of which were created to come up with these estimates. I can assure you, that the summary of those things would fill five or six fat notebooks. With the analyses filling bunches of book boxes.

What the good Col is telling Congress, give us this amount of money, we can build more rifles, and we can get the cost per unit down to some value.

That's all a Congressman needs to know. $$$.

American Rifleman put the range among different manufacturers from $30-$75 apiece (1940's dollar). That's $400 - $1000 respectively.

Also, in today's dollars, WW2 cost $1,000,000,000,000 dollars. That's 1 Trillion dollars, or $7,500 for every man, woman, and child.

These are the ORDERS from US Ordnance. The only thing I can show you is what they (US ORDNANCE) was doing. My two books are just what you see here. Orders for the testing, changes,etc., Until Production starts and as we get closer to WW2.
