Gentlemen,
These are just two small files that show some of the breakdown of costs for the M1 Garand. As you can guess there are tons of files on this subject.

Without input from you guys no one learns anything Try to put in some info/question and we can learn more of the M1's History. Your input is very important to all of us.

This data is for some of the new guys Some of these files were on the old Microfilm and hard to copy. Sorry

According to that document, with startup costs, the cost per rifle was $655.00 each for the first 1500 rifles in 1938, which is equivalent to $9,658.56 each today. Cost per rifle without the startup costs, was estimated at $152 per which is equivalent to $2,241.37 per rifle today.

By 1940, cost per rifle dropped to $92.00 each, which is equivalent to $1,366.31 today. Modern M16s and M4s don't cost nearly that much.

And don't forget, that Govt. contract volume pricing. Gotta wonder what it would cost per rifle if it was sold in ones and twos to civilians.

SA got it down to just about 26 bucks per M1.
Assuming that was around 1944, that's the equivalent of $307.15 today. Of course, by that time, they've already purchased a few million of them. Actually, that puts them more in line with Govt. pricing for M16/M4s (what's the US paying for M4s today, something like $450 each?).

I gotta wonder what the first few thousand M16s cost the DOD?
