I finally broke down and ordered a pump gun. Ordered a Remington 870 Express 7-shot. Its in matte with plastic furniture, 18.5 inch with 3" chamber. I like the stocks that are on it and will be keeping them, probably won't be putting a sling of any sort on it. May put a side saddle on it, depends on if it will get in the way of my hand during cycle. Its what the department I work for (I'm not LE, but work in communications) puts out as issue so I can snag a side saddle and see how I like it before I buy one. I got it for 340 bucks and from what I had read here and elsewhere it is going to be one of the best options for a HD shotgun. Up till this purchase I had used my sporting 1100 as my go to HD gun, however it was hard to swing that negotiate that 28" gun in my house. I plan to dutch load my 870 with 2 3/4 00 buck and 1 oz slugs (buck, slug, slug, buck, buck, buck, buck) Any thoughts on my decisions. Input is always appreciated. Below is the link to the remington page and the model I ordered.

Sounds like you made a nice purchase, but I think you may get some criticism on your want to dutch load any HD gun. My personal recommendation for your situation would be to get a $3 cloth buttstock side-saddle from Walmart (they are actually pretty well made, I know I was surprised on the quality) and say, have slugs in the sidesaddle and buck in the tube, or vice versa.

Regardless, enjoy it!

WV, although I'm a Mossberg guy when it comes to shotguns, I admit you won't be disappointed by your new 870. Congrats! As far as loading it, I too have the stretch-fit shell-holder from Wal-Mart, well-made, and it will protect the stock from dings and scratches. I'd keep buckshot in the tube, and some slugs in the shell-holder. Buck does better in most HD situations.

Good choice on shotgun, but slugs are rarely a good choice for ammo in HD/AS scenarios. Keep some handy, but not in the mag.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I have a couple of the elastic stretch fit shell holders. Keep one on my dbl gun. My rationale behind the loading was that, for the most part the gun will be a pick up and go outside gun as I'm pretty quick to grab my old .38 in the nightstand. The pump gun is more for hearing a disturbance outside. I live in a rural area a ways out of Charleston, just as apt to have to scare off/shoot a black bear in the garbage as an intruder.
